Senegal vs green cheek conure

Hi all, I am looking to bring a new companion into our home. I have narrowed it down to a Senegal or a pineapple conure. I want a cuddle bird that wants to be with me and one that might talk a little. I am home most of the day. I can not handle a dusty bird due to my allergies. I am so confused and need help on which to choose. I have done a lot of research and now I am more confused then ever. Please help. Thanks!!

From what I have learned conures are little birds that like to play with people and toys. They also go through a nippy stage and at times have loud flock calls. They love to cuddle with you and crawl in your clothes. The senegals have a reputation for being one of the quieter birds. They can talk but not as well as the Greys. It is a difficult choice for you I am sure. You probably already know in your heart which one to choose.

It is true as SpiritBird as said, Conures tend to be loud. Dusty generally has a few screaming fits at least once or twice a week. He is a very friendly bird who loves human company. He likes to sing and dance. or just sit on my shoulder and "chat" to me. There is a green cheek at my work who also loves attention. He is fairly quieter but that could be because of the overwhelming amount of people walking past his cage everyday. I am happy in my choice in buying Dusty. He has brought never ending smiles to my heart.

I do not know much about Senegals so I cant give any insight on them.

Thank you all. I still dont know what to do. I just dont want to make a mistake as this is a forever home for the bird. I really want a bird to cuddle as I am going thru the empty nest syndrome, talking would be nice...I know they both talk alittle. Today some one offered me a baby indian ringneck , now I am really confuse. Any thoughts on this would wonderful and greatly appreciated!!

I don't know much about Senegals, but they are closely related to Meyers. So hopefully this will help.

My Meyers is quite cuddly and says a few words. He wasn't very playful when I first got him, but he is becoming more playful over time. Still not as playful as the lovebirds I used to have. Alcatraz is strong willed - he will glide off of his cage and run across the carpet to me when he believes he needs immediate attention. So be prepared to keep a close watch on your baby, especially if the house is not completely parrot proof or if you have other pets.

Oh and one other suggestion - reach out to any local avian rescue organization or even resources such as craigslist. The process won't just be cheaper, but more rewarding as you are providing a home for a bird in need. I still feel some guilt over purchasing Alcatraz from an avian store now that I know how many birds need homes.

I wish I could help. Genevieve has a good suggestion about rescues. They may let you spend some time with different species, too, which would help you decide.

But then again, you could become even more confused !!!!!!

Ah! I hope it's not too late for me to chip in!

The 'pineapple conure' which you mentioned is a species of Pyrrhura, completely called the Pineapple Green Cheek conure (Pyrrhura molinae). What is different about the Pyrrhura genus is that they are NOT notoriously loud- unlike their Aratinga and Nandayus cousins (sun conures, jendays, nandays, etc). Green cheek conures and all of their mutations are fantastic birds- I raise them myself. There are many things to consider when choosing a bird. While these guys are wonderfully cuddly, not very loud, and very playful, they also do go through a nippy stage around six months of age. It is really very easy to overcome if you're willing to work through it.

Senegals, another wonderful species, are a different thing altogether. They are more laid-back, also quiet, and very playful. Senegals can also become nippy, but that is more due to neglect. They tend to be one person birds (if raised that way) and are very intelligent.

Thanks for all your help!! I got a wonderful little pineapply concure. The cage I have is the perfect size for this 12wk baby....20 x 20 x 26. This little one is so cuddly and funny. Fell totally in love with the face of these conure. Those eyes are just get me. Now all I have to do is name this baby...any sugestions.

Thanks for all your help!! I become a new mum to a 12wk old pineapple conure. Fell in love with that face and those eyes just got to me. Very cuddly, even it he/she does go thru a nippy stage it will be worth all the love and cuddles I will receive. Now all I have to do is name him/her...something maybe tropical...any suggestions?
