Okay so heres the thing...
I really want a senegal, but I have 2 cats...? One is a successful hunter, the other...not so much. But I think they would both stare at the bird and freak her out? Has anyone had any experience with birds and cats living in harmony? I don't want the bird to be stressed out constantly. There is the option of having her in another room, but then she wouldn't be as close to all the people (more secluded-behind closed door)??Help??

I have a cat but I keep my birds in a seperate room with the door closed. i have my brothers in there and we have a tv and a bunch of toys to play with and we leave them out all day usually except for night time. If you have another bird put it in the room with it. Thats the best I can give. Good luck:)

I have a very laid back Maine Coon kitty that is intimidated by the bird but at the same time she can be curious too. They seem to tolerate eachother but I never let them together with my bird out of the cage without my supervision. If you cat is a hunter then I would be weary.

our cat will sometime get into the bird room but she has gotten in enough that she kind of realizes that she can't geth the birds so she just sits on the floor and watches them hope around in the cage and have fun. She is declawed in the front as well so she can't hurt them through the bars but yea once your cats realize they can't get the bird they will give up after a while. I hope this helps.:D

I have both a cat and 2 birds in the house, Cody being in the living room. My cat Mittens gets curious and will sometimes approach his cage, but after being scolded enough she stops doing it after a while. No matter how much she learns to ignore his cage, I never, EVER, would trust her with Cody outside of his cage! When Cody comes out, Mittens goes up. She gets put in either the bathroom or my brother's room. There will never be any exceptions. I've seen what she does to mice, and all I think of is that being my little Cody!! :(

I would STRONGLY advise against you ever having them out together. If he's in the cage, fine, but never have them out together. Birds and cats don't mix! That's like having rodents out around a terrier...

Also be careful of pasterella as well! I would not let your cats hang around the cage either (risk of transmitting it if they lick them through the bars/knick them with a claw, etc. Bad, bad, bad :( )

Even if a bird and cat get along (which does happen), I wouldn't take the risk of transmitting Pasteurella. Not worth the risk to me.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I guess it really depends on you own bird's personality and how they react to the cat..

Gracie, my senegal, would always meow at my brother's cat whenever he would walk by haha. He was a very laid back cat and Gracie loved him!

also another thing is my tiel knew how to say here kitty kitty and my cat would walk over to my tiel's cage it was quite comical

My Sennie used to mimic my cat's meow too...even though my two cats were decent hunters, both of them were scared of the bird. My Sennie had such an attitude, if the cats were out and about while he was out of the cage and playing on the floor (I was there with them the whole time) he would charge the cats. If they tried to put their paw or nose inside the cage he would attack and eventually they decided it was safer to leave him alone. I can't see a Senegal being afraid of the cats...I would judge it by his reaction to them while he is in the cage. My bird was more frightened of a sock than he was the cats!

My cats Satchel and Gibby are both outside bad ass hunting freaks. I was curious as to how it would work for me. I had never planned on separating my family members and was ready to do what I needed to do for some sort of harmony. I'm a lover with my cats and all animals for that matter. So I thought any sort of "animal whispering" would work based on my relationship with them. As it turns out, I didn't have to do a thing. It is obvious to me that my cats know that Tuco is a family member just like they are. Both cats have been face to bill with Tuco and all was well. And if I'm laying on the couch with Tuco on my chest both cats want to snuggle up with him. My profile pic is day 2 with Tuco. There was immediate acceptance from both my cats.

I have a Red Belly and a cat, but I'm very careful. My cat is sweet but kinda dumb and doesn't fear Peach and Peach definitely doesn't fear the cat. Recipe for disaster. I also lost my 9-year-old Quaker (whom I had had since she was hand-feeding) to a cat I thought was laid-back. I'll never take the risk again.

I have five cats, a CAG, and a sun conure. Some of the cats were very afraid of the birds at first (especially Chile, the conure--you know how loud they are!) but now everyone gets along fine. The cats have a healthy respect for Calvin, the CAG, and she and my Siamese seem to like each other. Mostly the cats ignore her whether she is out or not. She was raised with cats and there was never any problem.

The cats are more interested in Chile; he is smaller and his long tail is very tempting! I would not leave Chile out unsupervised, but then he is always on his play gym (me) anyway. Sometimes I will have a cat on my lap and Chile on my shoulder. I am careful, of course, to make sure there is no contact because of disease.

It is do-able to have a cat/bird household. Look on Youtube and you will see plenty of examples of cats and birds being friends. If you understand animals and how they communicate it can work. Just know your pets. The most extraordinary relationships are possible!
