I buy my cockatiels their seeds at a local feed store. They buy them in bulk so they are not kept in air tight containers and I will never buy seeds from them again after going to give my boys some seeds (as treats of course) and finding bugs in them! I saw a maggot and a few fully grown bugs! Will my boys be ok? They are only feed the seeds as treats, for foraging, and a sprinkle on their chop each morning to entice them to eat it. I however do keep my seeds in an airtight container so I wonder how are they still alive? I got rid of all of it and will start making my own seed mix so I can control what goes in it and I can make it out of healthier seeds.

While the presence of bugs in seeds is gross, quite natural and rarely if ever harmful to your cockatiels. Many folks freeze the seeds, killing larvae and insects.

Used to feed BB a pet store brand of seed and over time moths would appear in the bag even when refrigerated. Now he gets just fruity blend pellets and bird Street Bistro. When Amy goes outside and walks in the grass I catch him munching on grubs. Protien! Don't think a bug or two with hurt your tiels.
