I found a larger cage for Gerry on Gumtree!

I messaged the seller asking all the usual questions
"Is it complete, has it housed a sick bird, is there any rust?"

I was told that they had sold their Amazon the day before and that there was "no rust."

I don't drive and so paid someone £60 to go and collect the cage for me.
I then received two picture messages from the person collecting for me...
A huge scratch through the powder coating, plus a rust hole! :(

I spoke to the seller on the phone...

Me
"I wanted to put a parrot..."

(Interrupted by seller)

Seller
"Yeah, yeah we had a parrot in it. It's fine for that."

Me
"I wanted to put a parrot in it that can't fly, and so..."

(Interrupted by seller)

Seller
"We had our Amazon in it and it's fine. The rust is like a centimetre."

Me
"I wanted to put a parrot in that can't fly, and so he will be climbing all over the cage with his beak. And as rust is toxic..."

(Interrupted by seller)

Seller
"The paint on your doorframe is toxic but that won't stop him chewing it."

(Imagining what his birds probably ingested regularly)

Me
"Erm, he can't fly, so he can't access doorframes, so he won't be chewing it."

Seller
"It's only a cm on the outside, so it doesn't matter anyway."

(Why wouldn't rust matter?!?!)

Me
"I'd have to heat and bend some acrylic to cover the rust part on the corner..."

(Interrupted by seller)

Seller
"Acrylic is toxic too. Look, I know about parrots, I've had parrots, I've had amazon's and greys, I only sold my Amazon because he was loud. The cage is fine."

(You sold your Amazon because it was loud... Yeah, because parrots are notoriously quiet?!?)

FACE-PALM OF FRUSTRATION

All throughout the call I could hear their partner saying" it's on the outside anyway!" Like parrots don't ever come into contact with the outside of their cage :(

I looked back at the advert for the cage and saw the previous occupant, an Amazon, sitting on a perch with one hanging toy. No wonder the poor guy yelled, I presume he was bored out of his mind!

Just because someone has previously had amazon's and greys, does not mean they were any good at being a parront! Previously owning a parrot or multiple parrots does not make unsafe things any safer or acceptable. It's just annoying that I had to waste £60 instead of having them tell me that there was rust in the first place! Hopefully whoever bought their Amazon is going to spoil him!

*Sigh*

Just had to get all that off my chest - Asides from being misled, I really don't like being Interrupted mid sentence either! At least I don't have to worry about that happening on here! Haha :p

Pushy people who try to hide damage on secondhand items... And then having the gaul to act like it's absolutely nothing after stating the item was in great condition.
I think we all come across a few like that in our lives.

Wow. I hope you find a good cage for him!

The seller has updated their advert!

"Due to time wasters I still have the large cage one little mark thats it"

Grrrrrrr.
They have added a picture of the "mark" - but it's not a mark, it's a hole in the powder coating revealing rust beneath!

It's REALLY annoyed me! I really want to send them another message, something like...

I must declare that I am not very happy with being referred to as a time waster, especially when I think you will find it is YOU that wasted MY time.
My friend had to drive for more than 3 hours, only to find out there was rust, when I had specifically asked you in advance already (in order to avoid potentially wasting anyone's time.)
Unusual that the price has gone from £150, to £190, and now £195.
Ps: One hanging toy and somewhere to stand does not constitute a healthy and stimulating environment for an intelligent creature such as an Amazon. I would scream all day if expected to live like that.

Just because someone has previously had amazon's and greys, does not mean they were any good at being a parront! Previously owning a parrot or multiple parrots does not make unsafe things any safer or acceptable.

Sounds like people who assume that just because you haven't personally cared for x-species of parrot that you are still an amateur person who knows nothing about working with birds, despite the fact that training them is quite universal!

Sorry you had that experience!

You are right! What parront would buy a house they haven't seen and then have someone pick it up?

ah yep. its called a "used item" for a reason and yet everyone is looking for a "deal"

It really upset me today that my Western Amazon bred Macaw could not help himself to keep eating all the rocks, dirt and mud 5 times. He chews aluminum cans, tears the paint off his powder coat house. Eats the newspaper, destroyed the locks to his house, ate 2 phones, shattered a flat screen TV, bit a battery in half, meanwhile all he wants to do is eat dirt!

Not sure if you get the point here or not. This appears to me to be about you, not the bird. Iron Oxide is an abundant mineral. Sand it off if you dont like it. He can make more rust on the cage when he wants to.

THe above is my opinion. Sellers should know and/or you should. Buyers Beware and or buyers are liars..

/end I am not a perfect parront, i feed my boy snow!

I've not had this happen to me before. I guess it's just because I'm so meticulous when selling second hand items, it creates a standard in my mind for others. If I sell something on eBay, every blemish is photographed and described. It just baffles me why people can't answer questions correctly about an item that they own that is infront of them. Rust is a deal breaker for me when it comes to cages, hence why I specifically asked the seller beforehand. Maybe they just thought it wouldn't be noticed.

Me too! I'll keep hunting, I'm sure I'll find one in time. For now I think I'm going to move him into Dexters old cage, it's slightly larger than the one he's currently in, so it'll have to do for now :)

I was mostly annoyed by the misinformation, butting in & talking over me, as well as wasting time of all parties. Left a bit disappointed.

If I can't find the one I'm looking for soon, I might save up a bit more for a new one. Gerry does get to come out and play, but I'd feel happier knowing he's in a larger cage while I'm at work during the day.

The guy just gave me the impression that if he says it's fine - he knows best because of all his experience.
But surely that experience would mean he'd be aware that birds are noisey and need more than a single perch and single toy to keep them happy. I just felt sorry for his bird, but then remembered they've gone to a new home. So hopefully they're happier now :)
