Female Blue & Gold Macaw
Elvis (thought she was a male)
We have a 16yr old Blue & Gold Macaw (Elvis). Had her since hatching. Thought she was a he until she laid an egg last month! We like many others are foreclosing on our home. Hubby no job for 9 months and had a heart attack last Sunday. We fear we are going to have to move somewhere and might not be able to take Elvis. She has never been around other birds. She has been around dogs. No problem. She is a very good bird. We rarely close her cage door. She stays on cage. She has her own room (our office). We have a portable stand so she can come to the living area with us. She likes both me and my hubby. I am so scared to rehome her as I don't trust anybody to take as good of care of her as we do. Any ideas for me? How do I find a great owner? How much should I ask? This is so stressful! Thanks for any ideas!:blue:

I am so sorry you are going through this right now. I think would start looking for places right away, I am actually from WA also. I work for a company that does Landlord screenings i think you should be able to find a landlord that would accept your bird, it may take a little more searching though, but i think it can be done. I would explain what a huge part of your life Elvis is to you. Surely someone with a kind heart will not want to see you part with anything more in your life. Take care and best of luck.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope you can keep your girl. Meanwhile, I do know two places that may be able to help you by caring for her if you really have to give her up. I think both of these people would keep her until you have moved into a place where she can be with you again, even if it takes a couple years.

The first one is Anna at the New Mexico Macaw and Cockatoo Rescue. Macaw and Cockatoo Rescue of New Mexico Anna's phone number is on the web page. Call her and tell her your situation. Please tell her Kathy Bergman, Sully's owner, said you should call.

The second place is Iowa Parrot Rescue. Mike and Abi run the rescue and are also wonderful people. They will work to help you keep Elvis or will take her for you if that is the best plan.
rescue They have lined out transportation "trains" where people drive a parrot a certain distance then hand it off to the next person who can drive farther.

These are all wonderful, caring people who you can trust. Please call them both and discuss some options. You and Elvis will be okay if you let them help you.

I hope your husband regains his health.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I second the look for an understanding landlord. I have a rental house and I REQUIRE pets, birds, fish, dogs (cats, if you must LOL). I've found people with pets are so appreciative to find nice accommodations that don't charge them a ridiculously large deposit and allow all types of pets (large dogs to large aquariums to huge macaws) that they wouldn't jeopardize that and make excellent tenants. I'd seriously rather have a pet person than someone with lots of small human kids or college students with lots of parties. Keep looking.

I hope you get to keep your bird. If you can't, I suggest calling your vet. Vets often know of good, responsible bird people (perhaps someone that lost a bird). I'd definitely check references out the wa-zoo.

Try northwest parrots .org they may be able to help you, maybe even be able to find a foster for awhile until you get back on your feet. I just googled Washington bird rescue and a few came up. Might be worth a try to contact a few to see I they can help out in some way. Best of luck. Wish I could help you out

No advice, but I wish you well and hope things work out for you.
