Yellow Shoulder Amazon, Salty
As the title says, my Salty, a yellow shoulder Amazon, will be
1 year old on 8/15. How to celebrate this day with an amazing parrot who has changed not only my life but that of my semi disabled, lovely wife. He gives me so much more than I feel able to return, a connection with living things and gratitude for life that I find one can loose. And he has helped my lady find a reason to work her way thru her pain to provide him with lovely chop and daily treats, singing with him during the day, making sure he has company and is kept safe while I am out there making the bread. So we want to make sure his special day is just that. We know he won't realize it's his birthday, and will probably involve food, but you folks who have parrots 10, 20 or even 30 yr old birdies have to have some cool ideas to let Salty know how much he means to us.

Al...I think The Saltmiester would tell you he has EVERYTHING a little boy could ever wish for..an amazing mom and dad and big brother who give him their never ending love and devotion,a full belly,a warm place to hang his hat,a furry friend to aggravate whenever he chooses..toys up the wahzoo, and a finger or two to taste, just to keep his caregivers on their toes  :p.MANY internet fans...and the list goes on lol.

Maybe he'd enjoy going somewhere in his Pac-o-Bird...a trip to his fav pet shop for a new toy,let HIM pick it out, a ride in the convertible..:18: Sure, food is a no brainer lol. maybe a stop at MickyDee's for a special "treat"...French fries! Or a munchkin from Drunkin Dawgnuts..that's one of Amys' fav places to go,the girls behind the counter spoil her worse than I do lol.

Salty will probably enjoy the day with you and your wife regardless of the activity! Always nice to here personal stories of how valued and therapeutic animals can be in our lives. I cannot imagine life without them, and neither could most/all of you!

It's been a year already! Wow, time does fly (yup, intended).

What we do, is a day that starts, continues all day and ends with what our Amazon defines as his favorite stuff. Yes, we do slip some limitations in, like: NO eating Mom's favorite chair is not part of the days activities.

The Day starts with his having Breakfast with me and the only plate on the table is 'ours.' Then its on to digging into the toy tent as deep as he wants and he can carry and hide as many as he wants too. Then a Morning trip around the outer beltline of town in the SUV (lots of windows to look out of). Lunch with Mom and once again his favorites and again only one plate! Just the way he likes it.

The afternoon starts with his favorite, custom built foot toy (rebuilt every couple of days by Mom). Then it is nap time for a couple of hours.

Late afternoon starts with sitting with Mom and chilling, set between singing their favorite tunes (most a combination of songs with his add-ins). Dinner is his favorite junk food BK frys with the salt removed and Mom's Vegie soup. Evening is a fun search of the house locating all of his toys. After that, is his topping the evening off with a nap on my shoulder.

Bedtime is his choice, with is commonly between 9 - 10 pm.

Generally, he sleeps later the next day!

What great suggestions! I would add, what ever joys the day brings, please remember to take plenty of pics to share.

Scott I agree 100% on that statement. The other day when Amy and I went out and about..the pet shop..donut factory..outside having lunch at the Chinese place..for me to see how HAPPY my little green girl was, just because she was outside, I could literally see it in her face. She was the perfect companion, her disposition was flawless. She enjoyed having her back stroked, her head skritched, and she was very vocal all day, making strangers who stopped us just to say hi to her,it brightened up MY day, seeing her having such a good time.

And when we visited Salty and his family,it was kind of a long day for her,the two hour ride to and from..the good amount of time we spent with Al and his family, she was "almost" perfect. Al?..Amy says she is sorry, but she just HAD to taste you   ;).
She rode down to Saltys, sitting 90% of the time on my shoulder. A few people honked and waved at her,one toll collector said HI to her, and she looked happy, which in turn made ME happy! Makes you feel real good inside knowing that your baby is having the time of her life :)

You all have given me some pretty cool ideas to let Salty know how much he he means to us. I known the day will end with a good head scratching, which I don't know who enjoys it more, me or him.
Any one else?

Al..you won't hear the end of it if you don't take PLENTY of pictures lol. :27:

Happy Birthday to Salty when it comes from baby Rory, Sowy boy and I!!

OK, here is my opinion. What does he love with you and your wife??? For example, my Buddy (I learned and he confirmed), loves macaroni and cheese, so on very special occasions he gets a teaspoon of Mac and cheese. To explain, I took Buddy in at 24 yo, his owners fed him Mac and cheese often. Since he's been with me (his previous owners passed two years ago) I give him Mac and cheese on very special occasions only. It's a treat.

You know what Salty likes, treat him!

ALL GREAT IDEAS... ABOVE,

This is a little crazy, but...
How man y of us have Skype or GoToMeeting or similar?
I would LOVE to have the Rickeybird on my shoulder for a beak-to-beak meeting with the Salty One!

I've been giving Salty's BD celebration a lot of thought. AND since it is truly a special day worthy of sharing, I recommend that you throw a party so that all of your parrot forums family and their feathered friends can attend. We should each send our parrot's favorite snacks as well as our own - you surely wouldn't want to fall short in the feeding of the big flock. :35: Maybe on an :ip: and we'll be sure to bring Salty a splendiferous :gift:.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about

Gail, now that is truly a unique and state of the art idea. Yes I have skype. And I will bet most other folks do. I am going to ask my IT person on Monday if a multi screen session is possible. Not because Salty deserves something like this, but it would be very cool to do it for anyone's parrot. So who wants to log in the evening of the 15th for Salty's hatchday party? I'll bring the virtual pine nuts. Amy can take a byte out of me, and it won't hurt! Byte, get it, Jim? LOL. If you have a painting of say...palm trees, you can pretend you're in Hawaii. LOL.
We could actually see the people who are crazy enough to share their lives with animals that are 2 chromosomes away from being real velociraptors. Now I'm really LOL. Oh, stop, Al, stop!

( 2 minutes goes by)

OK, any other ideas?

I use Skype Business and that version allows multi users but only one can present at a time, but everyone can be on audio too. I do several meetings a day this way.

Count me in! Sounds like some crazy fun... even if we have to do sequential calls instead of a group...

Sounds like a blast. I would love to participate, but my 'puter can be really wonky at times. I'll look for the pics and videos on the 16th :D
