SECOND EDIT: Thanks to all who have clarified this issue, I am happy to find that I likely made a mistake as to the intention of the reply in question. I apologize to the poster if your comment was not directed at my original post. Also thank you for all of your support regarding our bird that was killed, it is much appreciated.

I have been away from the forums for a little over a year and when I came back I was very upset with what I found. One of my last posts was about our first bird who was killed by Pampered Pets Hawaii (www.oahupetboarding.com), and I was infuriated by one of the replies I received. He was allowed to enter the cage of a cockatoo, who naturally defended his territory against our poor little lovebird.

Here is the post,"(EDIT: It has been brought to my attention this may have been a misunderstanding, to protect the poster in that case, I have removed this quote.)"

I would like to let everybody know that we now share our home with a very playful and cuddly Sun Conure, who likes to go on hikes and walks on the beach with us. Since we got him we have left home twice, that due to Hawaii's strict animal quarrantine laws, we have not been able to take him. While we are gone a young man who works for me, who had previously been well acquainted with our bird, spends a lot of time in our home with him while we are gone and usually stays overnight. He is in constant contact with us and has out avian vet's number, who is available for emergencies 24 hours a day. This young man is also informed about parrot behavior, nutrition, and common signs of health issues.

I was originally going to write the name of the user who is responsible for that post, but it doesn't matter because you know who you are.

The real reason I posted this is to enlighten all of you in the internet community who believe the way you live is the only correct one. Everybody on this earth has a life that you may be unfamiliar with, one that has different demands and situations that you have likely not considered. Please keep that in mind when you want to bash someone for conducting their personal business in a way different from your own. We all love our parrots and most of us give them the best we can offer.

Ricky was buried along side one of our favorite hiking trails, so we could visit him every time we go for a hike.

I agree with you... I would feel the same way if someone wrote that to me. You trusted that professional pet boarder with your bird and excepted them to do their job and take care of your bird. Im sorry for your loss and Im glad to hear you got another little birdie to play with. Good luck and Im glad you found someone who can help you with time away from your bird, so you can be with family :)

Well said! Unfortunately some people are just that closed minded and can't be reasoned with.
That's gorgeous where you laid Ricky to rest =') I'm glad you've brought another parrot into you're family, best of luck to you!

I think we all know that poster...

So sorry for your loss, and congratulations on your new bird...

RIP Ricky...

Yeah I checked and he is still very active in this forum. My wife and I are considering adding a second bird to our family, either a Yellow Collared Macaw or a male Eclectus, both birds who need new homes. I wish I had three shoulders...

between you and your wife you have 4 ;)

I like this Blues thinking!
Plus you've got forearms and hands and T-stands and ALL THE BIRDS!

I can't speak for the member in question... but I think he was talking about the situation with the child mentioned in a post just before his... the story about the intellectually disabled child who killed the birds... I think he was saying that the parents of the child were to blame? I don't think it was aimed at your situation. :) I can see how it might be interpreted that way. Just an unfortunate miscommunication I believe.

I agree with Thingamagigs - the comment was not directed at you but was referring to the disabled child who killed the birds.

First and foremost THANK YOU for your service! My husband is retired Army, and the hardships my family endured while he was serving is truly incomprehensible by many. Nowadays it's even HARDER than it was when my husband was active duty. I take my hat off to your wife and thank her as well for standing by and supporting her soldier. :)

Secondly I am SO very sorry for the loss of your Ricky. :( I wasn't a member yet at the time, so I have no idea what transpired. I am truly sorry for your loss though. :( I got all choked up when I read about where you laid Ricky to rest. :(

Lastly many congrats on your Sun Conure! How sweet!!! And by all means, go for #2...it only gets better. ;)

Wait....I wasn't done afterall.

STAY SAFE!!

I am so sorry to hear about your poor lovebird. I am always weary about any boarding because even if the owners of that business have the best intentions, they sometimes hire people who are not that knowledgable with our birds, dogs, cats, etc...

While it is sad to hear of your loss, I was happy to know you did not blame the Cockatoo and told them not to pursue putting it down.

In my short time here I have noticed that there is a small percentage of members here that feel that their way is the only way. To make it worse they feel their way MUST be applied to every situation especially those that they don't want to take the time to fully understand.

But on the other hand, the other 90% of the members here seem to be a wonderful well intended group willing to help others through challenging situations if they can. Not to mention the fact that they also get just as excited as you do when something big happens. In the past week I have had to show great restraint after getting offended by a handful of senseless posts. Then I just realize they have nothing better to do but to impose their negativity. So I am learning to just skip over those and read all of the other posts because those are the ones that really matter and are the reason I'm here in the first place.

Thanks for the service! Was stationed out of Fort Hood 2004-2010 myself.

Hmm. I see what you mean. Like I said, I have been away from the forums for a little over a year, when I came back I just read new posts since my last login. He did post a comment with a very different message on the first page. I wish he would have quoted the post he was responding to, then I wouldn't have ass/u/med he was replying to the thread starter. If this was the case, my sincerest apologies to the poster.

I will now put my foot in my mouth.

I can't agree more, very good advice as well. I generally do the same, however this hit a very sensative spot after such a long time. We had made this into a very big deal when it happened, the ASPCA investigated it, BBB was contacted, local people in the parrot community were informed. We were inches away from taking legal action. Again my apologies if this was a misunderstanding though.

Firstly, very sorry for your loss, I know all to well the toll this can take on a person.

As for your post I quoted above, yes I've seen this many times myself and I have to say it does bother me and I have a hard time keeping my mouth (hands from typing) shut when I encounter it!:54: Every animal/situation is "personal" and unique to each of us and we have to do the best we can to decipher each post as it was intended but this is not always possible. About the only time I'm dead set on an opinion is if I got it from my breeder whom I trust implicitly and has the knowledge AND formal education to back it up. There are a few "self-educated" people people in forums (any forum, not just here) that assume that they are beyond reproach and "can't" be challenged or doubted in their own minds. Sadly this is the way of the world and you just have to ignore them (or pity them) for their ignorance and/or stupidity. Having said that, do your best to carry on and move forward without dwelling on misinformed/misguided people/advice! Best of luck to you!!!!

One reason I look at forums for information is because there are so many different experiences shared. A book or static website usually has one line of reasoning. Getting information from a diverse group means lots of food for thought and ideas to try, not to mention sharing your own with others.

But it takes a good filter to deal with personalities, the lack of context in a text-only conversation, the culture of a forum, etc.

Isnt the whole point of the forum to share and discuss personal experiences in hopes that it can help someone new or unfamiliar with issue at hand. Every group has some members that believe they have the one and only answer for an issue at hand. This group has lot of well informed members who can speak from their own experience which is first hand rather then something they read or heard and for me that is the best source.

Absolutely. There are tools given to assist with context, such and quoting a reply. I always quote if I am not referring to the OP or the last reply to prevent myself from being misunderstood, which has happened.

I hope I did make this mistake, because if I didn't it would mean I received a very rude reply.

The diverse experiences are indeed indispensable when learning to understand our companions. That being said, I don't believe anyone should attempt to force their opinions on someone else, or chastise them for their views. The keyword as you said, is "share".

Again, to bkparrot, the keyword is share. The issue at hand was, the unquoted reply which I assumed was to my OP, when applied to my OP was blaming me for the death of a member of my family, whom we were boarding at a professional cat/dog/bird boarding facility. However it may have been a misunderstanding.

The blame would have been placed on me because the poster doesn't let anyone care for their animals, which is not an option for my family. Again, I hope I was wrong.

If I was correct, that is not sharing. And I have seen many posts on online forums doing this kind of thing. Gladly they are less common here.

I am so sorry for your loss. You can see by my signature I know about losing a companion. My heart goes out to you. All my boys are cremated and are in special engraved boxes in the shrine. I have put away a lot of the stuff that use to be in the shrine because when Valentino came he he came fully flighted. What I have out now are the three boxes, a heavy pewter cross I got out west, their clay talon prints the clinic made for me for each parrot and two parrot pots. This is what it use to look like before I took away a lot of the stuff.

It sucks now that there are two more "urns" in the shrine and I hope never to add a forth.

Valentino my RFM and Mihijo my Noble macaw were suppose to be it for me. No more parrots because these two were enough for me. Mihijo passed two months before Valentino was due to arrive home and we had been planing and paying on Valentino for a year and a half. Now that Valentino is the only parrot I feel responsible for his mental health. I know RFM's do better in a flock so I am in the quandary of adding another parrot. My head tells me it is the right thing to do but my heart still hurts so much for my boys.

Lupe wants another Noble macaw. I just can't do it. Not to mention the cleric it would take to find a NOBLE macaw that is pure noble and not crossed with a Hahn's I can't even mention how much I can't handle having another Noble because that would hurt too much. Mihijo was almost 18 years old and he should of lived another 30 years at least, he was my best friend and we had a lot of history together. I can't have another Illiger's or Eclectus either because my boys were so much a part of my life I can't go out and get "another" of the same species.

The decision with the second parrot I would like it to be a parrot that needs a home instead of going to a breeder and getting a baby. My local rescue seemed really excited that I wanted to adopt a parrot in need and was all for helping me find a good match for us but then communications stopped a month before Valentino came home. I am putting feelers out to a rescue a state over from me because I didn't see any policy of not adopting out of state so we shall see what comes of my diligence. I probably won't really push forward until Spring anyway. This winter for us have been more normal with very cold and average snowfall. I hate traveling in Winter and I am sure shipping animals has been suspended until the temps are at a certain high anyway.

One of the species I was looking into is the Yellow Collar macaw. I love mini macaws and have read a lot of good things about the YCM. We are also considering small Amazon species and medium size conures. It is my hope that we can find a parrot that will do well here that needs a home.

I hope you can feel comfortable with the form now to post about your baby. I would love to see pictures and hear about how your baby is doing.
