Well, I did spend some time with Rosie Friday at the shelter. Also had a real heart to heart talk with Jeanne, who runs A Helping Wing. She has always been kinda standoffish about me adopting Rosie... and Friday the interaction with Rosie kinda was why. I don't think she wanted to tell me outright no, she said part of their hope was that Rosie would have one of those moments when they know its the right person and they let everyone know the adoption should happen.... let's just say that was not what went down.
Rosie fought me coming out of the cage, but he fights everyone coming out of the cage. He was quite upset with the fact that I did not back off or let him have his way, so he spent quite a bit of time avoiding me. But let him have his pout time and worked with him a little more, but Rosie made it clear he had no interest in me and I had quite a few bites to show for it. At one point it was actually funny, he would walk to the other side of the table and literally stand with his back to me. I joked that it was clearly a one sided love affair. I offered him his favorite treats and he took from me and tossed it to the floor (for a second I had a flash of Folger!!).
So, I am totally willing to accept that an Amazon may not be an instant love affair, tho this was actually the third or fourth time I've spent time with Rosie and its always been this type of indifference. But this was the first time, we did not have any other birds out. And the whole time he was out, he did not say a word or make a peep. The irony was that we helped with feeding and cleaning cages, and Rosie while in the cage was just yapping away at me and called to me for attention several times.... so why the difference?
That is where the heart to heart with Jeanne comes in... she was hoping it would go differently, especially because she knows how much I adore Rosie. But, her worry that Rosie has been almost institutionalized, meaning, he is happiest when he has his flock of Amazon friends. And there is a rowdy group of 4 Amazons that have cages grouped together. I believe if I really pushed to bring him home, she would let me try it, but after our talk and realizing who / what Rosie is, I am not sure he would be happy in our home. That is unless I adopt the entire group of amazons, and sorry guys, no amount of cyber bullying is gonna make that happen!!
But, the good news here.... and there is good news I am disappointed because I just think Rosie is beautiful and so funny, he was calling to me and I kept do video of him calling me for attention, but everytime I got the video going, he would stop yelling hot bananas and start yelling f*^@n aye... which I obviously won't be posting!! Anyway, Jeanne and her husband, John, had already spoken about Rosie and me and options if Friday went poorly. They both thought we should try working with Paco the blue front amazon that was friendly to me and Victoria. The odd thing, Paco is not overly friendly to most people, so they thought that match might be great for Paco. And even before Rosie came out and treated me like a blind date gone terribly wrong, she kept telling me about an Amazon surrender that was coming in. She said first person she thought when she met this girl was me, opposite of Rosie, starved for attention, very sweet for an Amazon.
So that's the latest... everyone involved agrees that Rosie coming into a home as the only Amazon is not in his best interest, especially for how long he's been with the other birds at the shelter. Funny to think a bird is happier in a shelter, but they do have a great life there, so not like he's in a tiny cage with no toys or fresh foods... he's got a pretty good thing going on!!
But, still looks like there is an Amazon in our near future Victoria is going over to help with the shelter for a few days this week, so she will be meeting the Amazon girl before me... She also can spend some time with Paco, so we shall see what her thoughts are! But while no Rosie, we'll keep you updated on the which Amazon will it be adoption process
