Rest in Peace Rio
Tonight Rio was on top of his cage. I turned to go to the front door, and I don't know what happened, if he jumped down to the floor or fell... but my cat grabbed him! He started screaming, and I got him away from the cat right away. I am going to call my vet tomorrow (I'm not even positive she sees birds, I live in a small area with no specialty "avian" vets). I cleaned the wound, and put on a little neosporin. Is there anything anybody knows that I can do til I can call a vet in the morning? I feel terrible. :(

Where did he get bit? There is another thread about cats that talked about treating a cat bite. I would get him to the vet asap. You know how infected a cat scratch can get. Birds are very small, its very dangerous. I hope he is ok. Keep us posted.

The bite is at the base of his neck, in between his wings. I tried searching for a thead on cat bites, but couldn't find it.

I found one but its not the one I was thinking of. They recommended something besides antibotic cream to put on it. Iodine or mecurecom, I can't remember. I would not recommend either until you know for sure. Anitibotic worked for merlin, but it was a small scratch on his leg. Does he seem ok? I would be waiting @ the vets office when it opened. Also you need to find a avian vet for this kind of emergencies.

He seems to be acting ok, considering. He's sitting on my shoulder (his favorite place), seems alert, moving around ok, if I have him on my hand, he jumps back onto my shoulder. He's been sleeping on/off on my shoulder.

he needs a vet ASAP, cats carry pasteurella and a simple little bite will kill a bird inevitably. 80% of cat bites get infected and the outcome is NOT good.

i lost my budgie to a cat. i would get him in sooner to an emergency vet if you can tonight... or as early as you can get in... he may take a turn for the worst fast as they nearly always die without treatment.

I hope Rio would be all right!

One of the main reason why I do not allow my cats to be around the birds while they're out and about. Same with the dogs, only Willie gets to come out infront of the dogs and cats cause everyone is afraid of him. Cats' saliva is toxic to birds like it was mentioned. One of the sites mentioned cleaning the wound with hydrogen peroxide and put anti-biotic ointment on the wound. He still needs to see a vet afterwards to get injections if needed.

Oh no this is not good. A cat's mouth has so many germs that can do severe damage as said by others. Have you taken him to a vet yet? Time is important here.

I called my dog/cat vet as soon as they opened (actually I left them a message last night, and gave them 15 minutes to return it this am). They can't see me, so gave me the number for another vet. I called there, that vet should be in the office within the next half hour or so. They said she will call if they can see him. If I don't hear from them soon, or they can't see him, there's another hospital that has more than one vet. He's acting the same as last night. He's quiet/sleeping a lot. I cleaned the wound and put on antibiotic ointment. I hope he's gonna be ok. :(

Thank you all so much for caring. The vet called and can see him at 3:45. It's 10am here now, I was hoping for a sooner time, they said if something comes up that they can get him in sooner they will call.

We are all hoping it goes well and it's nothing to worry about.

Keep us posted. Sending happy thoughts your way.

I hope everything went well at the vet. We have fingers, paws, feathers and fins crossed for you over here! :)

We took him to the vet. She said he had a punctured air sac where the bite was. She gave him an injection for pain and antibiotic. When she left the room to go mix up some oral meds for us to take home, my poor buddy bird passed away. I can't express the words for how heartbroken I am. My living room is soooo full of Rio's things.... his cage, perch, playstand, etc.... it's so hard to look at it all. Thank you all for the good thoughts!
