A friends mother wants to sell her 11 year old scarlet macaw, so I offered to take her because the bird is in bad shape, she is a severe plucker and doesn't seem to be on a correct diet. I asked my friend how much she thinks her mom would want and the answer that I got was $1,000-$2,000. Now I don't know if it's just me but I find that pretty ridiculous due to the fact that I would have to take her to the vet asap, and basically rehabilitate this animal. Not to mention I would have to buy a new cage because hers is way to small.

The only response that I could give was "is she insane", well anyways im pretty mad right now lol

That's sad. The bird's health is more important than money...She should give it away to someone who cares.

Well they are the type of person that expect money for something, I got a answer back saying they are worth way more than that. Where im from a newly weaned scarlet macaw is around $1,000-$1,200. I am not trying to degrade the bird but it seems to me pretty mentally damaged.

The worst part of it all is they act like they no sooo much about birds when clearly they do not, and trust me I am no expert but I for sure could give this bird a better life.

Not to mention they got the bird for free, and want to make money off of it.
sorry for ranting but people just anger me so easily when it comes to pure ignorance

Yes I can understand your frustrtion...the birds health is way more important than money...some people are blinded by what really matters, when all they have is $ signs in their eyes...
It makes me sad to think that this poor bird has to continue living like that, & in a confined small cage, plucking itself....I hope they will grow some sense, & know that the bird is better off with you..
When my dog had 2 litters of pups 17 in total (boxer x staffy)..I sold them all for $50 each, that way I got a small profit, & I knew they would all get a home, I know people could afford $50 for pup, plus that would allow them to be able to afford the vet checkups with the vaccinations, worming & all else that comes with being a dog owner...If I put hundreds of dollars on my pups..I honestly dont think all they would of found homes, which was my main priority...I couldnt pay $400 for a dog...Money doesnt buy love...thats just my opinion...If these people loved that bird, they would do the best thing for it, & find it a loving home..especially if they are around $2,000, dont you think if you payed that much money for a bird, you would look after it properly?

Try pointing out that a $1000.00 bird is in better health, and feather. This bird has a lot of problems, and will take a lot of money for vet bills, and time and work to bring to good health. I have found out that, often, if you wait, the price goes down. I do rescue & rehab, and do not pay for any bird. When people want to get rid of a bird, it's because of noise, and mess. After a while, the bird loses its' value to them. Hopefully, the bird won't suffer too long. Be patient, it usually works for me.

ya I am just gonna wait it out and see cause chances are people aren't gonna be interested in her for that price and in her current condition. Trust me though if I had the money I would pay for her. But than I have her vet bills to worry about, a new cage and toys

but thank you all for the replies

I am thinking about it, but I live in a different Province that they do. Plus we don't have the best laws when it comes to birds here. They would see that she has food and water, so that must mean shes fine. If I can see her again and talk to the owner I am going to talk to her about the rehome fee and see if she will lower it after I explain things to her.

It sucks though because she technically isn't breaking any laws that I know of

I'd tell her she's killing the bird and by putting such a high price, condemning her to depression and death since the poor bird is plucking and in a small cage :(

That poor bird :(
I agree they need to put the bird first. By the time they realize nobody is going to pay that price for and older bird with phychological issues and possible health problems, the poor bird would have only gotten worst. The price they are asking is only justified if the bird was young, healthy, and happy.

I wish her luck.

It sounds like they have more of an affection for money than they do the bird. Walk away. I can buy or "adopt" older Scarlet macaws in central Florida all day long for $500.00 thats with the cage and in good to decent feather.

This poor bird must have been cage bound for him to have started plucking.

Ya I am done arguing with these people, they won't listen to reason and just don't care about the bird. It's really sad the way that some people think.

but I told them that if they decide that they want whats best for the bird to call me. Not much else to say to them.

but thanks for all the replies figured this would be the best place to look for advice and vent.

Just some advise here. Perhaps you can clip some ads on younger fully feathered Scarlets and at a cheaper price and take them to the seller of this Macaw, Ask them how long they have been trying to sell him or her with no luck and advise them that no one will purchase this Scarlet for $1000.00 to $2000.00. I would not go any higher then $400.00 for this scarlet. If they reject this, look elsewhere and it maybe better to go elsewhere if you really want a Scarlet and one that is worth $1000.00 to $2000.00.
I'm not sure on how much you know about Scarlets but they tend to be a handful and quite nippy. If you are a first time Macaw want to be owner, you may want to look into the Green wing or B&G, or blue throat Macw. They are much easier for a first time owner and form very strong bonds with their owner. Just putting this out there. Best of luck Joe

I was just hoping to get this particular bird out of the bad situation it's in, but the owners don't care about her and just want the money.

I want a blue throated for my first macaw btw, from what I have read about scarlets they sound interesting haha, just really felt bad for this bird

Poor baby. I hope these crazy people come to their senses!

That is so sad, poor bird. I understand your frustration but it sounds like they are only looking for money and not the best interests of the bird. How sad and how cruel. If they do not come down on the price and let you have the bird. I would contact the local authorities or a local parrot rescue to see if they can get into the home and talk some sense into the owners or at least just take the bird from them and rescue it from a life of pain and misery. Don't give up!

Right now they're not talking to me, so I am gonna let things calm down and try again. I'm trying not to make them get angry because than I won't have a shot at convincing them to give her up
