Hi, my friend is giving me her 6 year old blue and gold macaw. They have kept it in the basement and it has seen little interaction. It is missing feathers on its stomach. I feel terrible for the bird and I want to give it the best home possible. Can anyone post a link containing macaws care sheets, and any information on rehabilitating this bird? I can use all and every bit of information anyone is willing to share.

You will find a lottt of information on the internet. research research research. Most importantly the bird needs attention. Start by sitting near him several hours a day. Then start hand feeding him treats. When you gain his trust, then you can start trying to take him out (or get him to step up after he's already out). You will get bitten at some point. Do not let the bird know you are afraid.

Like I said, do a lot of research, then come here with specific questions when they arise! Good luck with your new feathered friend.

First and firemost, the bird should be taken to an avian vet for blood work and fecals to ensure that he/she is healthy.

Then you can find plenty of suggestions on how to care for a macaw here! Be sure to read up on a healthy diet, appropriate sized cage, foraging, positive reinforcement training, etc!
