Tulie ... A lilac crowned amazon
We rescued Tootsie a lilac crowned amazon from a shelter in Boston and will be bringing him home tomorrow. He is 30 years old and lived with the same woman his whole life until she passed away recently. He's been in the shelter for six weeks and I'm just wondering if you all can give us a few tips to make him comfortable with his new home.

Give him some "space" in the beginning . How does he react to you when you visited him? I'd keep him close to the center of activity in your home, not isolated in a room. I wouldn't change much from what he's used too until he settles in. Any other advice would depend on how he acts in his new home. Welcome to the forum and hope we can help you and your new family member.Tons of good info here and great members who'd love to help. I think there's a few other members in your area, maybe they could offer suggestion for a good vet. You need to touch base with them in case you need them.Other than that ,read though the amazon section and pick up some info and tips. Ask question if you have them and welcome to the world of amazons.
PS thanks for giving an older bird a chance.

We visited on three occasions to make sure it was a good fit and everything went well. He was walking on my wife's arm on the second visit which made her feel good. We are glad to have found this sight and look forward to sharing our experiences with you all.

Thanks

Pictures !!! we love pics

Welcome!

I've taken in 2 amazons in the past year. Here's my advice:

1. Pay attention to henpecked. He's the resident amazon expert!
2. Over the coming months, remind yourself, "My amazon has only been here for x weeks/months. That's short, compared to 30 years. All things take time.
3. Let him set the pace.
4. Enjoy!

Our 1st amazon is a lover & a cuddler & wants to spend his time with me. Our 2nd amazon is kind, polite, & chatty. But I still can't pet him - he is not ready. So I remind myself - he is 20 years old, lived in the same home for 19+ years & in my home for 5 months. Let him set the pace . . .

Welcome! Our first parrot was a 32 year old Amazon. She hand been with the same family her while life like your new guy. She took a little while to warm up to us. She is a true joy, she will sit and talk all day, laugh at our jokes, and even calls us by name! My husband is da or dada, I am gobble gobble. :) I agree listen to henpecked and just read all you can!

We rescued a lilac crown amazon almost one year ago. She was 15 at the time (so almost 16) she was at a horrible place. (has since been closed down by the U.S. humane society, another long story) I agree with the other posters, henpecked is a great resource! He was very helpful when we brought Kiwi home. She has been a work in progress, she has come a long way however I am hoping she will someday be a bit more "cuddly". She wants to, she observes me with my cag and truly tries little by little to allow neck rubs etc. This was our first spring with her and I just want to say "prepare yourself"! It was a shock, her change in behavior, then just as abruptly she is back to her old self! We love pictures! Good luck and bless you for adopting an older bird!

Welcome to this forum. Place yourselfe in tootsies situation, then you understand and act the right way. Quite soon you will learn to read tootsie and knowing what she want and not want you to do. Good luck

Well Tootsie is in his new home and seems to be fitting right in. He's definitely more vocal but we expected that. He wouldn't step up on me at the shelter but has no problem with it at home. I posted a picture in the photo gallery

Congrats, let us know how things go . Did you get a chance to read some of the older topics? Keep us informed.

We've been reading non stop trying to learn as much as we can to make sure our new family member is comfortable. He's been a little more vocal today and exploring his new cage and toys. We're so happy to have found this forum.

We're happy you found us.!!!
