I saw an Amazon for sale on the internet and that they needed to get rid of it due to their child's health. I inquired and talked about the Blue-Fronted Amazon female. I could tell that she was not eating well because they were feeding her leftover cockatiel food, egg supplement, and vitamin drops. She had no cuttlebone or mineral block. When I immediately taken her to a bird shop, the owner told me that she couldn't keep her nails together during a trimming. They were literally shredding and fallling apart. Her skin on her feet is also extremely dry. I took her home and left her there overnight when I went out of town to help a friend. The next day, she came right out of the cage. She's been cuddling with me and is already talking within 3 days!

I've given her an egg with the shell on and I have some ground oyster shells. I feed organic pellets in addition to fresh fruits & veggies.

Does anyone know any tricks to get more nutrients and vitamins in her, especially calcium??

If your feeding good quality pellets along with fresh fruit/veggies then it's best not to add additional vitamins. You can give too much which is not healthy.I'd suggest unfiltered sunlight and things like sweet potatoes(baked, steamed, microwaved) carrots, hot peppers, etc. For calcium try chicken bones (well cooked),deer antler, cuttle bone, mineral blocks can be too much.If you feed egg shell ,bake the shells in the oven and crumble them up,fresh can damage her crop.Oyster shells should also be baked and hung whole with chew toys, same with deer antler.Good questions

Good advice. In addition for calcium you can feed kale and almonds. Please do not feed the egg shells as they are because in todays world there is a chance they are contaminated with e coli. Yogurt is another calcium rich food. Good luck. A vet visit is in order for this llittle girl so you will know exactly what the levels are and if there is any organ damage from a poor diet.

I see you're in Florida. Do you have a screened lanai? If so I would get her out there 3-4 hours a day if you can do so without her getting overheated. If you don't, you will want to get her a full spectrum light. They need the sunlight to process the calcium best. I use bulbs from featherbrite.com in my own fixtures, but they sell entire lights if you need them.

Aww, poor baby :( I'm glad you came along to save her. Sounds like you're doing everything right. You also might want to try some cottage cheese to up her calcium and protein as well. Kazi loves it which is great because he detests yogurt so I give him a bit of cottage cheese about once a week with some chia seed mixed in. He makes a mess, but the dogs are happy to help clean it up.

You make me really happy rescue this perrot and from what you are writing you will have a frind for life!! Good luck!!
