So my boyfriend's parents were coming home from their trip this past Thursday and were about to pull the car into the garage when a little kitten darted in. Luckily I was there, so they called me outside after I grabbed a towel, and I scooped the poor thing up. He gave me no resistance whatsoever and seemed pretty out of it. I sent my boyfriend back to my apartment to grab my carrier so we had somewhere to put him. He was really out of it, head was wobbly and didn't seem to have any idea what was going on. I'd estimate he's maybe around 6 weeks old, based on his behavior and teeth, but he's got a vet appointment coming up.

Before my time with birds, I always had cats growing up, and most were stray kitties, so I'm pretty familiar with their behavior. We went and got some milk replacer and some cans of kitten food, I already had syringes at home that I had bought for handfeeding baby birds that hadn't been used, so it was perfect to start feeding the little kitty.

He was definitely weak, but no signs of infection or anemia, just likely dehydrated and exhausted from the high heat we've had this past week. He got a bath with some dawn detergent to kill off the one or two fleas I saw and to get all the dust and dirt off of him. He took to the syringe pretty easily, but wasn't drinking quite enough so I did have to force him to drink enough milk replacer, some of it watered down a bit. I was up most of the night with him, making sure he got fed every few hours. His urine was dark but at least he was peeing!

It took a good 12 hours or so before he started perking up, but it was a relief when he was, I started mixing the milk replacer into some wet food and feeding him from a spoon, his appetite was better but still seems to have a way to go. Took him two whole days to finally poop, which was a relief for me! I was starting to get worried.

Definitely a spunky little guy now, just starting to explore a little (though limited in my apartment, he's in my bird-free computer room and sleeps in a little crate.) Started meowing finally, and will eat on his own, getting slightly watered down wet food with some dry food mixed in, and dry food left in his bowl though he can't chew super well yet.

We hadn't named him yet, because my boyfriend and his family weren't sure they were going to keep him, and I had already started looking for homes, but they got attached even though they're not animal people because he's just so darn cute. He's surprisingly sweet though, especially for a stray of unknown origin. We think we might have seen a sibling dart down the alley that same night as well, but haven't seen it since, nor have we seen any mamma cats around. Living on a major road, he's very lucky to not ended up on that side of the house either.

I think he might be maine coon, but it's so hard to tell at this age, he's definitely super fluffy! And trying to decide on a name that everyone likes is like pulling teeth!

Congrats on the new family member, lol, and thanks for taking the little bugger in.

Both my cats are non-shelter "rescues," one was full feral, absolutely loaded with fleas, and the sweetest cuddle bug of a cat I've ever known, (And that's a long list) and the other was a "pet" that was never allowed inside and not really fed or cared for, and she was rescued in -20*F temps on February, a lot more independent and a hell of a mouser. (Both are indoor cats since they would be on the menu for the local wildlife.)

Yeah we're hoping he'll be a good mouser (there's been one lurking at my boyfriend's house for a good few months that's avoided the traps.)

I'd love to keep him with me but I have too many birds and he wouldn't have enough freedom, maybe once I have a house and can have a specific bird room!

We've got until Thursday's vet appointment to think of a name, I suggested Finn, but nobody liked that!
