Well this evening I walked into Lucy's room a little latter than usual to cover her and she looked like she was sleeping.. As I got closer she came to the side of the cage and started to scratch the side of her face and yawn... She did this about 7-8 times one after the other..before I reached in to take her out..(I thought she was in distress).. She then stopped..

I have read that this is normal for some parrots to clear there throat... But I have never seen this in any of my other parrots..

Thoughts opinions??

I asked my breeder the same question. She told me sometimes they get a feather out of place and it tickles their little ears. She said they "yawn" to try to stretch and realign the out of place feather that is tickling them. Not sure if she was right but it made since because my girls do it after they scratch that area of their cute little heads.:p

Makes sense since she was scratching around her ear....

Guess that's one way of dealing with it, but never heard of it before.

At night after training, Mishka begins yawning and continues till he goes to sleep.
Must admit he does not look handsome when yawning LoL

People say if you play around your macaws ears it tickles And they enjoy it supposedly. Some of my macaws will take there feet and scratch the own head kind like a signal for me to do it for them and they will yawn when they get around there ears.

Never heard of a feather being out of place around the ear...

Previously in the past, there were a few people who swore that parrots don't yawn because their respiratory system is far superior to ours so that they never lacked any oxygen. Whenever it appeared as if they were yawning, the birds were simply rearranging their crops.

I disagreed. Not the part about rearranging their crops, as I feel that parrots do that, just the part about the yawning! ;)

maybe it means you need new material...

Safira'll yawn whenever she starts scratching her ears, or if I scratch her ears. She LOVES her ears scratched and rubbed. Course when she does it, she does this great talon up the nostril thing at the same time.
