Rehoming an Amazon.

I am looking into possibly rehoming an Amazon, the lady sent this to me in a message - - -

I have only had him a week, and have not held him. I have put my hand in there and he says uh uh,lol....and goes to the other side, but acts like he wants you to pet him, like I said its only been a week and he does need to get used to someone before he lets you mess with him. The man I got him from said he had him 3 months and never attempted to hold or pet him. However when I have my hands in there, he does not offer to bite me.


Does it look promising? Do you think with some time he could be trusted, how does he sound to you guys?

I wouldn't do it if I were you, didn't you just get your macaw? I would form a good relationship with him first before adding another bird that needs work. Why did this woman get a bird she knew wasn't used to being held, and then after only a week she wants to pass it off on someone else?

She claims she was allergic.. I am not rehoming this baby until I get my macaw good and used to me, this is mostly for future reference.

I have to agree your macaw needs you right now to build a relationship with him. If Pete hadn't come around for me so quickly I would not be adopting another bird right now.

I suppose it's possible she's allergic. I learned really quickly with Pete that he needs showers every other day or so to keep his dander down or my allergies kick up. But, I think it's more likely that she is afraid of the bird. I'm always leery of a bird that was just bought/adopted by someone and they immediately want to find it a new owner. I talked to a couple of people like this when I was looking for a new bird.

Your Macaw doesn't 'offer to bite you', and still you are too afraid of him to ask him to step up...

Give your current bird a year, before you think about adding another one.
