Nike a Hawk Head Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus)
I have some Red palm Oil coming in the mail today. I want to try it over some veggies and maybe even Nike's pellets.

Nike does not eat any veggies at all with the exception of a little sweet potato. I understand that the palm oil isn't liquid, but rather a buttery substance. How do you use it? Do you warm it up so that it can be drizzled over the food?

I know I should use it sparingly. Nike's Harrison Power Treats contain it and she loves them so I figure I'd give it a try.

Hi bill

I usually just knife out a small chunk of the solid and deposit it on the food. In the summer when the house is warmer the oil melts a bit (it’s still fine. Melting point is maybe 74F or so), and I may just drip the oil over the food.

I don’t personally intentionally melt the oil, it’s just one more step, one more dish to dirty up. But it’s certainly a valid way to do it.

I’ve read the red palm oil is very good for their feathers. So, I do give it to Levi from time to time.

Does Nike like pasta? If so have you tried the Veggie pastas?
Levi loves pasta. So, I decided if he’s going to eat it, he should get maximum health benefits from it. I found a spiral pasta that offers 5 servings of veggies all green. It was broccoli, spinach, kale, zucchini & I can’t remember the 5th one off the top of my head. I just finished the box the other day. There are also some w/ carrots, tomato & spinach and the like.
He’s also a big fan of quinoa. I mix that up w/ fresh veggies & he loves that as well.

Hope that helps ....

Thanks Chris.

Tami, great idea. Yes, she likes pasta but I never even thought about the veggie kind. I'll have to get some. Thanks for the great idea.

I got the palm oil and rubbed my finger in it and smeared a pellet...which she ate fight away...maybe this will work on other foods.

Huh, I tried giving red palm oil to my kākāriki but they never touched it. With Tiki declining the way he is (I think he's become depressed after I took him and Ria out of the aviary, and now that Ria's dead I'm having a hard time getting him to eat enough), I actually tried force feeding it to him with a syringe, but that didn't work too well. Maybe I'll mix it in with a bit of his favourite vegan ice cream and see if he'll eat it on his own. And no, for noobs out there reading this, don't give birds ice cream. I only give it to him because he spits out his medicine unless I mix it with ice cream. He's also emaciated, so it wouldn't kill him to eat something fattening and full of (unprocessed) sugar once in a while. Right now he's only eating pomegranate, blueberries (sort of), tomatoes (barely), a tiny amount of broccoli, the odd waxworm, and sunflower seeds. I don't know how he hasn't starved to death yet. Poor baby.

Oops, sorry for hijacking your thread, bill_e! Need to figure out how to get little Tiki to swallow the stuff.
