I have a 4wk old amazon that I recued from a guy who was selling it on the side of the highway in Panama. The baby's eye were just open. I started feeding him parrot fumula and until yesterday everything was fine. Now it seems he doesn't want that anymore and I am having a hard time feeding him with the spoon. I know he is hungry because the first spoonful he goes crazy but after that it's nothing but a fight. I have tried giving him scrambled egg, parrot pellets softend he seem to want it but doesn't know how to chew and swallow. I would really appreciate some ideas and if anyone knows how much should he be eating.

NO NO NO!!! You MUST MUST MUST get this baby to a certified avain vet YESTERDAY, it's a matter of LIFE AND DEATH that this is done correctly and there are too many babies that don't make it because people don't understand what they are doing. Right now, at four weeks that baby should probably be eating 4 or 5 times a day ... Go! Now! ... what are you waiting for?

Hand feeding isn't for the novice handler ... there are so many things that can go wrong ... crop burn, food can aspirate into the lungs and suffocate the baby ... Please understand that I am not yelling here ... just stressing the fact that you NEED TO SEEK MEDICAL HELP FOR THIS BABY or it is not going to make it!

I am going to Agree.. It does not sound like you are equipped to be handeling this..Have you been taught to properly hand feed. this baby is not ready for the types of food you are giving it.

Please get help.. From a qualified person.. AV. or good breeder.

Thanks for the replies. I am not a total novice, I use to hand raise kakarikis but with them they mature much faster than amazons. I am feeding 4 times daily and am aware of crop burn along with other hazards. What I am not sure of is the amount of food[formula] he should be eating. I can asure you this baby is very healthy. The other problem I am having is that I am in David, Panama where I am trying to find an english speaking vet. I was also wondering how long should the parrot be hand fed.
Thanks again,

I think most amazons wean at about 12-16 weeks ... I think you are in for the long haul ... the baby should eat until their crops are full, but not completely distended ... as for exact amounts, I have no clue ...
