Merlin a Red Crowned Amazon
I was looking on the internet today & noticed that Merlin looks more like a red crowned amazon rather than a red lored amazon. Check out my avatar. Its a older photo, he has more red on his head now. These different parrots are totally different species. any ideas?:green1:

Hard to tell from the small avatar (my eyes suck) looks like a red lored amazon to me. The red feathers on Oliver go to the backside of his eyes, other than that they come from different regions, they have similar dispositions in terms of behavior and talking ability

He looks like your bird now, i would have a hard time telling them apart from a photo. I was told @ the pet shop he was a red lored, but he doesnt have the yellow or orange cheeks. From the photos on the internet, he doesn't look like a red lored. I m very puzzled, it probably doesnt matter, unless i get him a girlfriend later in life. How old is oliver?

looks like a red crowned to me.. My girlfriend's red-lored has pronounced yellow cheeks. Red crowneds don't have those yellow cheeks. Cody is 30+, but all pictures of red-loreds I've seen past the first molt have pronounced yellow cheeks. Also, red-lored amazons tend to have daker colored beaks...

I looked @ Merlins papers last nite & found out that he is a "Mexican Red Hat" or a Red Crowned Amazon. I feel like an idiot, I havent looked @ the papers since we bought him 4 years ago. The pet shop referred to him as a "red lored" & I never thought anything else about it. I doesn't really matter, but I have been puzzled about the lack of cheek color, now my mystery is solved. thanks for your help.
