Hi there,

Doing some Saturday morning online shopping and looking to add a good bird scale to my list of bird supplies.

Which ones do you use and/or recommend?

I have a dove and a house sparrow, so i need a scale that can weigh small birds properly.

Thnks!

Any brand of digital kitchen scale that weighs in grams and has a "tare" function, which they all do anymore, is perfect. Really no need to order one online unless you find a tremendous deal, as you can run to your local Walmart, Target, Bed, Bath, & Beyond, etc. and buy any number of them for between $15-$30. I recently bought a second one at my local Walmart because I decided I wanted to start weighing my Bearded Dragon as well as my birds, and I wanted a separate scale for my Beardie. Walmart probably had 5 or 6 different digital models, all weigh in grams, all have a tare function, the only differences between them are the size of their platforms and whether or not they have a memory function. The cheapest one was $14.99, and the most expensive one was $29.99, and it had the memory functions and some other functions that would only be used for cooking.

So you've got a lot of options available locally to you, but if you find one online that is really a good deal then that's another way to go, but I wouldn't pay for shipping when you can just run out any buy one locally (unless you aren't able to drive, etc.). There's nothing special that you have to buy to weigh your birds, I don't know anyone who has purchased any expensive, scientific scale to weigh their birds, lol. Pretty much everyone uses a simple, digital kitchen scale.

What Ellen said. :)

I have a flat digital kitchen scale. I toss a few miniscule chile seeds (which weigh almost nothing) strategically on it such that the Rb steps up to eat them and gives me his weight. I know of some people who like to set a t-perch on the scale and use the tare.

I constructed a very small perch (just wide enough for my bird to stand on) out of PVC and put the on the kitchen scale and TARE it out. Then I sit my bird on the perch to weigh him and he can't really move or go anywhere so the weight can be read accurately. Works well for us and cost next to nothing to make and works with any larger sized gram scale.

I didnt realize a kitchen scale would do. Thanks for all the help!

If your bird cooperates you do not even need a t-stand; mine just step on the flat surface. Getting them to stay is sometimes a bit of a challence, other days they'll just sit there.

I bought a snazzy one from parrot wizard and it is a digital scale with a perch on it. It would be ideal, except that it looks like the one they use at the vet, so my cockatoo is scared to stand on it lol....arg

I prolly have the same one you have Nood's...very accurate to the T. Weighed Amy just before her check-up at Doc Kristen and the weight on her scale was exactly the same. Got it from the wizz also :)

I find that C major is a good bird scale, no sharps or flats. Those minor scales are murder!
