Great idea, using journal tape or receipt rolls on parrot toys. I didn't come up with this by myself, I found this toy at an obscure toy shop. The idea and toy has been amazing. It's a roll of journal/receipt tape hung from a rope to Venus' play mat. She loves unrolling and destroying the paper roll. Great toy idea and it's been so successful here. I rip off the shredded, worked on session, and she goes for the new section again. It keeps her occupied for hours.

As long as it is plain and unscented toilet paper rolls are also great for larger birds. I bought the receipt tape from My Safe Bird Store and made toys out of it hoping my birds would love it, so far none have touched it but the Goffins at my workplace loves them. Definitely a good affordable, refillable toy if your birds are into shredding paper!

One of my big guys TRULY enjoys these rolls just a little bit too much. :52:

Really nice idea! Is there an issue with thermal paper?
You don't want to use the thermal paper, it has a coating that could be toxic, just use the regular adding machine or receipt rolls.

I said my birds showed no interest and sure enough tonight Greenleaf started pulling out the roll and playing with it! She had to make a liar out of me. Phonebooks are another cheap to free shredding toy similar to receipt rolls that birds seem to love ;)

Poppy loves her reciept paper, I found her first one on sale at Petco with an acrylic dispenser, refills are pretty cheap.

I was going to make a new post about adding machine paper, but did a search and saw this rather recent thread! Hope you don't mind me asking a question here.

I'm hoping to get some adding machine paper for my birds, as my grey Nilly has really come to love shredding stuff. I'm going to buy one of those fancy dispensers, and was wondering if these would be safe for refilling.
...Because that is really cheap and wonderful (and I'm buying several things online there anyway).
They're plain paper, elemental chlorine-free.

I've been trying to do my homework on what's safe, but I think it's best to get input from others who know better.

Mine is a dowel stick that goes through the spool. The dowel on each side a hole drilled through it so a piece of rope or twine is laced through and knotted. I hung it on her mat using a C clamp. I didn't make this, I found it at a pet store. Someone sells hand made parrot toys there and this was one. Venus loves it and shreds it for hours, one of the best toys I bought for Venus and Buddy. Here are some close ups.
