Re: falling out of bed...?

Hi All,
Here's the events from the previous day.
Am: breakfast as usual. Sheldon has a "May Day" followed by a pretty good wreck that tweaked his leg:(. as the morning progressed along, his leg was normal and played as usual
Afternoonish: I've been planning on changing out his perches into more stable ones which changed the diameter some. He got around pretty well on them.
Pm: I wheel his cage down to the bedroom, cover him up. The one night I sleep without earplugs I hear him fall from his perch:11:. I then hear him climbing back up and all is quiet for a while. Then he falls again, climbs back up and is quiet till morning and all events are back to normal

He's eating and drinking and goes about his normal business. Not sure if that falling out of bed thing is normal. I plan on putting him in a smaller cage for the night with perch size more to what he had before. Is there something important I'm missing or will this just be a passing event?

Thanks. 1HR

Re: falling out of bed...?

Hello,

Its been about 24 hours is he still doing it?

Is he walking normally?

My Parrotlet Jumps to the bottom of her cage eveyday, it makes a funny thump/twang sound on the grid, I run over and she is sitting there trying to pick things from the tray or eating from her bowl, then she climbs back up

Re: falling out of bed...?

Could be something spooked him in the night (sound of an animal outside, house creaked ext...). He may also have been hungry/thirsty and not been good at navigating in the dark to his dishes (I've heard more than once the 'cracks and crunches" of Kiwi having a midnight snack:rolleyes:). Some birds also do not do well being blackout covered and need a little nightlight. My parents amazons are only partially covered at night with one of those small wall-outlet 'glow' night lights because if they hear something, they will come crashing off their perches if they also cannot see. Some birds get night frights too, but that does not sound like the case here.

It may also be helpful to put a smaller diameter perch at the highest perchable point in the cage. Parrots like to sleep high, so while varied perches are necessary, if he does better sleeping on a narrow perch, that's fine. He will exercise his feet on his other perches during the day. You could also try a corner platform (which small, flat wedges, made of metal bars like the cage) as the highest place for him to sleep on at night.

Re: falling out of bed...?

He fell once last night. he seemed to be moving around a bit more too. I know they like to perch high, but that also gives him more of a distance to fall. The bottom of the little cage is springy..not so ridged as his bigger cage. I did put his snuggle thingy in with him and I did hear him fooling with that. Maybe tonight will be better. I'll make a few changes. I like the night light idea too. Thanks

Re: falling out of bed...?

Update: I brought his smaller cage out and let him crawl on it and in it for a while. added water and some pellets. At bedtime I took him and the cage to the room, covered it part way and plugged my phone in to recharge. It has a soft glow to it. He moved around some but never fell out of bed :) I'm hoping that was just a passing thing, like sleep walkers. Is there anyplace that I could get a small light that wont keep me up but just enough to illuminate his space. Maybe a fiber optic or very small Christmas light for model houses?

Re: falling out of bed...?

Maybe you could get a small night light and plug it into and an extension cord and sit it near his cage, they have the ones that just kinda glow
(not close enough for him to get at it though)

Re: falling out of bed...?

Check the baby section at Toy's R Us - some of the new night lights just barely light up. Also, Michael's might have their Christmas stuff out and you might be able to find some village lights. (Sorry - I just realized I don't know where you live so you may not know what Michael's is - it's a craft store.)

Re: falling out of bed...?

Thanks Joe, Thanks Dopey. We do have a Micheals out here. I'll try my daughters village lights first. Then if I'm closer to the main city I'll hit the baby store too.

Thanks Kiwibird. I'll check that out today.

Re: falling out of bed...?

Have you thought of getting a Happy Hut or something similar for him to sleep in? My Maxx loves his, he also goes in his to take naps during the day.
