Questions about tree branches with parrots

I was thinking about gathering tree branches for Jordan. I know what trees I can and can't use, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to get branches from outside. Last year I had Elvis and Chrissy outside and I let them perch in trees, and I did the same with Jordan just this past Monday, but I am now questioning it. Can I use the branches from trees?

I also can't find anything about Cherry plum trees being safe or toxic. I have one in my garden, and was hoping someone could tell me if it's safe or not.

I'm not sure about that specific tree.

Any time you bring branches in from the outside they should be baked to sanitize and kill any bugs.

But last year I gathered perches from an out of the way spot that I've been using for years. I've taken hundreds of perches from this area as have many of my friends.

The day after I put these perches in this time, three birds in three different cages in two different rooms DIED. There must have been some sort of chemical treatment done that we didn't know about. I doubt I'll ever take branches from the wild again.

Bake branches? How?

I am well aware of the possibility of chemicals, but I would think at least my parents would know about it if used on our property,

First you scrub the branches with something like vinegar and water or a small amt. bleach and water. Sometimes one can remove the bark because insects lay eggs under the bark. Best way to get fresh branches is to have a tree identification book and go on a walk after a wind storm. In the growing season you identify a tree mostly by the leaf. If it is winter season you identify a tree by the bark. You will find many fresh branches on the ground that way. Willow trees have great branches that twist and turn. After the scrub if the branches fit I an over you just bake at a low temp. of about 225 for 20 min. and let them stay in the oven until it cools down. Its a fun thing to do.

My parents said no chemicals have been used. So I'll go gather some tomorrow or Friday.

Per this list, plum in general is considered to be toxic! Remember, in your area either Sycamore or maple should be plentiful!
