Severe Macaw, Double Yellow Amazon, Parakeets
hi everyone. im new here :)
ive had an amazon for the past 8 years, hes been a dream since day one. never bitten. never screamed and is such a gentle soul.
well today we found out a lady from our church is having a dif***lt time right now and needed new homes for her animals. my dad volunteered to take in her severe macaw. so we picked her up today and it was such a sad scene. poor baby didnt want to leave his owner. it was heart breaking. she finally got into her travel box and we brought her home. we let her stay in there all day and she got out on her own eventually and climbed up her stand. i was so happy she had decided to get out of the box, i had been reading a book to her and i guess she was like okay girl ill get out lol. anyway she let me get close to fill up her water bowl and i gave her banana chips from my hand. (YAY)
anyway after that she seemed really nervous. she keeps shaking her head ALOT! and squaking super loud. lol she will stop if i leave the radio on and leave her in the room alone.

should i just give her spaceor continue to keep my distance but talk, sing and read to her? do you guys have any tips for me?
its just that its such a different experience from when i got my amazon.
also she has alot of "feathers" that dont look like feathers? just sticks? like a feather wrapped in plastic per say? is that normal?
any tips, stories, recomendation will help. thanks!
:green2:

Always remember that adjustments are hard on companion animals. It will take time for the severe to first get used to you, her new home, the new sounds, maybe new foods, etc. she will still be waiting for mommy to come and rescue her for a while.

Let her be for a while. She will come around. In a couple of days start by sitting on the floor near her cage and talking quietly to her. Don't stare at her just kinda talk and not look at her too much, make sure you sit below her.

It may take as much as a month or more for her to get comfortable, don't rush it and she will be fine.

It sounds like she just got done with a molt and she has a lot of pin feathers. She will fix them when she feels like it. ( put a pic up of the feathers and we can tell you more.)

Those sticks are the sheath that fills with blood which turns into a new feather.
