Hello all! I live in a two-bedroom apartment by myself. I'm 20 years old and I work full time. For a long time I have really wanted a green cheek conure, and I am finally in a financial situation where I can afford one. But I want to make sure all other aspects of my life are in order for getting a pet bird. First of all, when I'm not working, I'm usually home. So I know I'd be able to spend at least a few hours every day with my bird. However, my work schedule is very irregular. I work at 5 in the morning some days, and 11 in the morning other days. Some days I work 4 hours, other days I work 12. Would that be an issue for my bird? I know that birds like routine and it would be very difficult to set up a routine with my work schedule. Plus, I'm not sure how long it is appropriate to leave a gcc alone for. I would love a bird and I know I'd spend all the time I could with it, but the health of the bird would be first. If an irregular schedule is a dealbreaker, I'd want to know now before I commit. Thank you all for your time!
If you already had a GCC and therefore had a working relationship, and this kind of schedule had to become part of your interaction, it is possible to make this happen.
The problem with starting with a new member is the need for time and some level routine that your GCC can adjust and set its life around. At this point, it maybe much better to education yourself, bring your life into a more stable schedule.
You will also frustrated because you will want a more stable schedule so you can enjoy GCC.
Having a parrot is lot like having a G/F is some respects. Its tough to start a relationship if you only see each other once in while. I love parrots, but there was a long stretch in my life where having one would just not be good for a parrot. Starting to be successful at work, having 3 kids being is a very successful band 5 nights a week, it was not possible for over 23 years. If you love them, wait. Do some volunteer work at shelter, if you have some time. Thats my advice to you.
