Question about young conures...

I have a Crimson Bellied conure that is about 7 months old. She was soo cuddly when I first got her. She would just sit on me and let me rub her and fall asleep on me and now she's all over the place all of the time. She will let me rub and pet her pretty much everywhere, but won't just sit and cuddle with me anymore. Are birds kinda like puppies when they are this young? Will she mellow out at all as she gets older? She's super sweet, but just a busy body. I"d love to be able to just cuddle with her without her being all over the place all of the time. Just wondering if this is how she will always be? Or if they will calm down a little as they turn into an adult. Thanks!:)

They are definately busy little birds! I compare my conure to a small child hyped up on pixie sticks! lol "What's over here?! Maybe I should run over there! Hey! That looks fun!"

That's a great analogy! LOL And, I don't mind it, except that I would love to be able to cuddle with her sometimes as well. I've had her for a few months now and there was a period of time where she wasn't out as much because I was having horrible morning sickness and feeling awful, so I am hoping that once she's out more again now, she'll calm down a little to what she was before. It was so nice to have her fluff up and let me cuddle with her. :smile015: I miss that.

Cuddle time is great! Sometimes River is in the mood for cuddle time. At this very moment however, it's run from one chair to the other, jump on the keyboard, try to pull off the keys, run back to the chair.....

Cricket loves to cuddle just beore the lights go out at night. See if that helps.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Evening time just before bed when all the lights are down are when they are cuddlier.

When i first got my sun he was so cuddly but about 8 months old he started running around doing 8 different things at once. He is still the same way but loves to settle down around 7 pm for a hour long snuggle. The rest of the day i am just trying to keep up with him. But i do get a lot of laughs from the funny stuff he does. Nothing is sweeter than him jumping down on the key board rolling over on his back to get tickled.

I wondered the same thing, as our conure is 6 1/2 months old and I swear he's ADHD! ;) Hahahha...he's sooo all over the map, he wears me out just watching him.

I took him shopping with me yesterday (his first outing since we bought him) and ran into my friend and her grand daughter who'd never met him yet. Franklin was happily climbing all over me, chewing on my watch, my ring, my nail, then I opened a gatoraide, he was all over that bottle, trying to get the plastic ring off (one of his favorite things to do) We stood out in the parking lot for over an hour visiting and watching Franklin. No end in sight to him just settling down for a snooze...and my friend said..."My goodness, he is BUSY..NON STOP busy!

I chuckled...yep, he's like having a 2 year old all the time. :D

I also mentioned to her that I wondered if he'd settle down a bit as he ages. Guess time will tell. :)

One suggestion...

My GCC LOVES her blankie. I have a purple micro-fiber cloth that I keep on my couch for nap time. She doesn't like to calm down until I hold the blanket up and give it a little shake, then she comes running. I hold her in the blanket sort-of firm (not too much that she couldn't get out if she wanted) but she really likes that "snug" feeling. You could try that.

If I don't hold her somewhat snug she will move. But like I said, it's definitely not enough that she couldn't move if she didn't want to. She just likes being snuggled tight. :)

Our black cap is kind of like a cockatoo in a conures body, not that he is overly cuddly but he has this mentality that he should be able to be with us ALL of the time. No matter what we are doing he wants to be on us or right next to us. While that sounds adorable and like it would be awesome, sometimes it is downright annoying. If I'm trying to get something done on the computer he likes to land on the laptop screen, problem is that he insists on chewing on it! And we really don't have an extra $500 laying around to buy a new laptop when he puts his beak through the screen  What I'm trying to get at is, even though he is very well socialized and really wants to be with people, he isn't really cuddly very often and I do get bit quite a few times a day by him :/ Most of the time it's very random, he will hold his foot out and say come here and then when he steps up he will bend down and nail me on my finger. I've never really had a bird bite like this, he's not very easy to read compared to my other parrots. It's not a little "test nip" either, I have plenty of holes in both of my hands where he has drawn blood! I have met quite a few cuddly green cheeks but it seems like most of the other conures I have met weren't very big on the cuddles.

I think our birds are very similar. Brilho needs to be with me ALL THE TIME... but the random bitey thing is getting old. :/

haha same here! I just want to look him sometimes and say "would you make up your mind already!" The worst is when he bites me and then says "I love you". Confused little birdies...

Imagine what breeders goes through when they raise chicks. Its the part I never forget, little toddlers moving around nonstop and getting into anything and everything...lol...but I love them anyways...

Most birds are not cuddly animals.. It's just not in their nature.. Of course they can be conditioned to like it, but that takes work... While they're very young they'll take any attention, but as soon as they're weaned and flighted, they become birds.

Researching birds in the wild and see how much space they have between each other... Only pairs are close, and as humans we shouldn't be the other half.
