Hello all :)

I have a question regarding foraging. I have a 4 month old CAG that I would like to teach to forage for food rather than just having it in a bowl. I have put several foraging toys in his cage with seed mixture and pellets and he does use them now and then but he is not good at it yet. My question is should he also have food in a bowl now he is so young or is it best to only have it in the foraging toys so he learns he has to forage for his food?

Bonus question: He eats pellets, a good quality seed mixture and veggies. He prefers the seed mixture over pellets. I give him pellets and veggies in the morning and he eats all of it. I remove it after 3-4 hours and then I give him seed and pellets but he only eats the seed mixture. Should I remove the seed mixture completely from his diet? I use the tidymix seed mixture :)

If he can get it out just leave the foraging. It's supposed to be work- if it wasn't you might as well just leave the bowls in. If he has barely any luck, just make foraging easy- move the bowls, put a paper or cloth over them.

I would nix the seeds from the diet, but since he does like them, use them as a easy and very cheap treat.

He does get some out but not so much and after a bit of time he kinda gives up. I do put paper over his pellets and seeds and I wrap his veggies in baking paper :)

You're doing good. I think he would be fine if you took the bowls out. He can retrieve food, but gives up probably because he knows you will give him a bowl. Birds are very resourceful. They fly around the majority of the day hunting for food. So he may be bored with the "hunt" or not hungry.

You could always feed sprouted seeds over dry seeds....

Foraging should be easy at first, and work him on his way up to harder challenges!
