Our sun loves cuddle bone.. he will literally eat it until we take it away from him...its always been that way, since we brought him home...

So we've just been giving him small pieces as we go... I was petting him and his sac seemed hard, it was hard yesterday too... I let him flip upside down on my finger, then I rubbed his sac.. not hard anymore...no he didn't have bad breath...so probably happenstance.

So now.. the actual question is, should we just let him have an entire cuddle bone? His diet is pellets and seeds for treats, with fresh vegies every day..oh.. and he gets bread crust from his mommies toast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.. not a lot.. a piece about the size of your thumbnail..

I would ask the vet.. but he's at a funeral...

I already hear your thoughts... why is he asking this after 9 months...idk.. just got curious :)

usually you can't go wrong with lots of calcium, but the thought of him completely filling his crop until it's hard is kinda scary. I wish I had a answer or some advice, but Rosie barely even touches her cuttle bone.

Any other info or opinions?

My cockatiels are the same. They LOVE cuttle bone! But they don't eat it all in a day, a small size will last the two for about 2-3 days. But Ozzie my alexandrine doesn't really like cuttle bone, he rarely touches it.

Pickle is the same. I don't give him cuttle bone that often because he will either eat it all in one go, or not touch any of it, drop it and waste it.

Occasionally he gets small pieces - no more than an inch either way, so he can hold them easily, I dont keep a whole bone in his cage because i know he would destroy it within a few days and ingesting that amount in so little time is completely unnecessary (no idea how unhealthy it is though).

Does your bird like cuttlebone on and off? My sun conure (11 months) will have times where he'd demolish an entire cuttlebone in 1 sitting, other times he would ignore it for weeks. He eats it and wastes a lot of it.

Does your sun constantly eat it? All of it? Sometimes they just like to bite on the texture. I'm not sure about the crop getting hard. I heard some foods are bad for the crop like high volumes of sticky rice and oatmeal. In that sense, anything in overdose is probably bad so maybe just offer a quarter of a cuttlrbonr every 2-3 days if its something that worries you.

Thanx for the replies... it doesn't bother me.. but I was curious :) Starburst will eat an entire cuddle bone in one setting... but we don't let him because a lot if it is wasted...so we give him big pieces every fee days...

As far as his sac.. it hasn't felt hard since...so who knows.. when the vet gets back, he'll go in for his 3 month exam...all of the flock will :)
