My wife and I just lost our African Grey to a very unfortunate choice of house sitters and now we have a big empty cage without anyone to live in it.

Its a very large Macaw cage and, right now, we're not in a position to purchase another large bird, and won't be for some time.

A friend of ours raises parakeets and is offering us a few to help with our sense of loss.

My question is: wouldn't a parakeet be able to jus walk right through the paces of a macaw cage?

I would think that the bars will be too wide on the cage you have for parakeets. They need 1/2 inch bar spacing, usually. You may want to measure the bars to see exactly what you are looking at:)

Okay, that's what I thought.

The bar spacing is 1-3/8" which, I'm assuming, is WAY too big for a parakeet to a cocatiel.

Very very sorry for your loss. Yes, not an appropriate side for a parakeet. Just a suggestion, keep your cage for a while at least, just in case you decide to get another bird.

we're getting another bird, if that you can be sure. my wife is just going through the grieving process and wants another bird and I'm trying to help her get through this as painlessly as possible.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I am sorry for your loss, and I will keep you guys in my thoughts. The bar spaces are too big for parakeets or Cockatiels.

What kind of parrot are you looking to adopt, if you can not adopt parakeets or a Cockatiel?

When we lost our red factor canary, Skiddle I cried for months. Skiddle was a very out going bird. One day I found him dead on the bottom of his cage. I was pretty naive but after joining this group, I realized he had air sac mites. He made friends with the wild canaries who would come and feed at our feeder. They would talk through the window. I finally had to remove the feeder because after he was gone, they would come to my window calling for him. Ugh it was sad. They did this even after the feeder was removed. So about four months later I got my parrotlet, then a Senegal. Both birds have helped me heal my heart for the loss of Skiddle.

It would be a fun cage for a parakeet to be in but the bars are waaaay to big. If you were to put a little metal fencing wire wrap around it it wont be able to get through. Or you can put something inbetween the bars. Just suggestions O:
