I am possibly moving to California. I am freaking out. I have a quaker parrot and sun conure/green cheek conure parrot and I know quakers are illegal! Some one please tell me conures arn't too! I don't know what to do. I love my quaker to pieces and cannot imagine having to part with him! Has anyone lived in Cali with a quaker? Conures arn't illegal right? What will happen if I do take him? Please answer. I having been crying for days trying to find some exception or rule that says I can take him. PLEASE ANSWER!!!!!!!

I live in California. Yes, unfortunately Quakers are illegal here. as for sun and green cheek conure they are not illegal.

I really wouldn't worry about it, it's not like you're a breeder with hundreds of birds....and I doubt a goon squad will be dispatched to collect your bird. If anyone asks, just say he's a green-olive conure! (No such thing). They're illegal in Florida also, but a cousin of mine has one, and has had hers for almost 20 yrs. unless police or the DNR are called on you, you have nothing to worry about. Just lie. If you're worried about checkpoints (if they're any) than do some creative feather altering with food coloring. It's one time only. If I had to choose between coloring my bird with food coloring, or losing her, she's getting colored.

Quaker parrots are legal in Florida and are bred here. You can buy them at pet stores, breeders , craigslist etc.:)

OK I have to ask...WHY would a Quaker be illegal anywhere? I get why ferrets are illegal here in Cali (although i think a lot of people have them!) but why an innocent Quaker parrot?

Because they're afraid that as a few get lost in the environment they will thrive and flourish in the wild. They build large heavy nests often causing problems with the power companies. I'm sure there are also concerns of them throwing off the balance of local species somehow.

California has rules about everything. *sigh :(

When it comes to California and QP's, my experience has been that vets generally want to help your "bird" and do not desire to have knowledge of anything other than it is a "bird" and needs help.

The Quaker Parrot Society says that California is especially hard nosed about the rules and will not allow them to transport QP's out of the area safely. This was years ago that I asked. However, getting a QP out of CA and across borders into a safer state wasn't a problem. I am not so sure if it is that easy to get them into CA.

Yeah, Peeker is correct about that!! In Texas there is a HUGE flock of Quakers of maybe 30-40 and they build nests the size of small cars! That's why they are illegal. Haha The wild ones in TX are so cute though :)
