QP adopted update

19 days ago, I adopted Stonewall Jackson-"Jack". I was told he was about 3 years old. He has a vocabulary of about 10 words or phrases. In 19 days, I can put my hands in the cage and he nibbles on them, does not bite. He will eat from my hand and his favorite food in broiled chicken and scrambled egg. He loves to be scratched and will let me pick him up without biting and will come down on my shoulder from top of cage. He will reach out and kiss me.

Yesterday, I bought a table top perch to get him away from the cage. I pick him up and put him on that perch. He will not step up unless forced too. When he does step up he tries to go to my shoulder. Sometimes when I try to get him to stepup he will take flight. Additionally, he is less vocal. What am I doing wrong?

Have you tried using his favorite treats (besides chicken and egg... something along the lines of sunflower seeds, healthy nuts, dried fruit, etc) to get him to step up?

He does not like Sunflower seeds,pumpkin seeds,dried fruit-throws them out of the dish

Nothing... but you said "yesterday I bought a perch".
(just my 2 cents)
So... brought a new item in the house (nothing wrong with that of course)- but your bird hasn't had time to check it out from a distance and get used to the idea of it being there.


If I put my birds on something like that - even though completely harmless and they know it- they will fight to get away from it.
First they must declare it 'safe for bird', only then they will happily sit on it and demolish it if at all possible.


Give it time- let your bird know when he wants to investigate, how far he is willing to approach it etc.
It helps if *you* play with it, mess around with him watching from a safe distance.


Remember the old parrotidiom: " if it is yours -> I WANTS IT!!"

So what about almonds or walnuts? Maybe even millet?

Almonds if I break them, millet yes , have not tried Walnuts. Thanks
