My friend has a 23 yr old hen and she is in the process of what we think laying her first egg. How long can it take till she has finished laying her first egg? I am thinking it's like giving birth for the first time and it will take some time.

Anyone have experience with this?

Each hen is different. Some you never know and oops there it! Some birds strain and have stinky poos for hours. If it goes longer then a day, it is important to seek vet help out incase of egg-binding issues. What her symptoms?

I went over and checked on her and she has stopped trying to lay the egg. However you can see it's there and her vent is opened slightly. She is eating and acting normal tonight. At what point do we get concerned?

If she is straining or starting to lose her balance I would take her in ASAP! She should lay the egg within 12-24 hours of start. Make sure the owner is feeding her foods with calcium. Dark green veggies.

We have her first egg! She took about 2 days but did it. After 23yrs she finally did it!

Thank goodness! Now, boil the egg for 5 minutes, cool and return to her for 28-30 days. If you take it she will continue to lay.

She actually dropped a second one but she was @ the top of her cage so it broke. It looks like there is one more in there. For now I should say.
