So I was reading on Birds of beauty that PVC pipes are a big no no as a foraging toy. I read its because of the chemicals that are inside there. I was all set to drill some holes in some PVC pipes and start making some foraging toys for my mom's Galah, and mine, when she's finally available…lol.

Your input on this?

What safe wood pieces can I use for the Fids?

That's the first I've ever heard of pvc being a big no no..... A lot of people use it to build play stands, and I know for a fact that there are companies that make foraging toys out of pvc.....so I say continue on! Lol

As for wood- if you're buying from a hardware store...get untreated pine [emoji41]

Thank you! I thought so! But on their website that PVC pipes are hazardous.

I believe i saw another post from someone else that said it's the black pvc that's bad- the white stuff is ok to use [emoji106]🏻

There is also CPVC, or clean PVC. We use it in semiconductor business because it doesn't leech chemicals.

Black pipe is usually ABS and I don't know that it's any worse. You typically won't find it small enough for most perch/toy use.

PVC is usually white. Never heard any adverse effects of it either.

CPVC is not "Clean PVC" but rather Chlorinated PVC. It's typically an off-white tannish color. The major reason CPVC is used is because it is stable at higher temperatures than regular PVC. Important if you're using it for hot water pipes. It's also less affected by certain solvents other than water which is probably why your industrial process uses it. As far as the bird is concerned, neither PVC or CPVC is likely to be much of an issue.
