Purpose of food bowl part

I can not figure out what the piece on the left does.

It does fit in the food bowl.

The food bowls that came with my cage also have a top attachment, and my bowls are white. I have no idea what that top part is for and just leave them off.

I think it is to prevent birds from pooping into the food (especially in a multi-bird/aviary setting)

Yes that's how they go together as far as I can tell. I don't know the purpose of it, unless the company thought the bird would feel more secure maybe?

Like I said, I think the IDEA is to prevent poop from falling in, but in my mind, it just creates a nasty little nest, so I would leave it open

I let my bird goes outside the cage.

He was pooping thru the cage into his water bowl.

So I put a piece of cardboard over the bowl on the top of the cage.

You may be right that it's there to keep poop from falling in. Whatever, like I said I just leave it off!

When I was in high school, my mom had a cockatiel. Due to I don’t know what, she rehomed him with a good friend of ours. Little Frisbee climbed into a seed cup like that and broke his neck.

Bumble has stainless steel bowls but I have a set like this that came with her smaller cage. I tossed the lids immediately.

Bumble has stainless steel bowls but I have a set like this that came with her smaller cage. I tossed the lids immediately.

I looked at parakeet food bowls online and most are being sold without a top, only a few are. Oliver gets a fresh clean bowl of food, each day. The old bowl is removed and thoroughly cleaned with hot water and soap, ready for use another day. Sometimes I find poop in his bowl from the previous day, not always though.

I would definitely recommend for you to buy stainless steel bowls... plastic ones are not good for birds because they often end up chewing the bowls, so you may be able to find some beak marks on the bowl. Then there is the fact that plastic bowls have deep corners, debris can be stuck there, bacteria growth can start (not great). Also, if you try cleaning them with something like mild dish soap, then it will be really difficult to remove it from the corners and then there is obviously the fact that there is a lot of bacteria growth when use them as your bird's water bowl. They feel so slimy! NOT GREAT. So better to move onto stainless steel bowl
