My macaw has just broke a nut off of the cage and is chewing on it, will he swallow it? I hope not, he seems to just be grinding his beak with it right now..

Info fast please

Hes also making some sort of a grunting noise, is this grunting normal?? Sounds almost like a little piglet.

give him something else or treat so he drops the nut, not sure if he would swallow it, but its not good for them to be chewing metal, incase it leads to heavy metal poisening (to be on the safe side, i have suffered a few bites taking bits of metal of my nut)

no idea what the grunting is, prob very happy with himself for taking off his 1st nut, to freedom

Sometimes they do swallow things like that, so yes, get it back as soon as possible. My amazon makes a lot of what I would consider "bad eating etiquette" sounds like slurping and gulping noises. I'm guessing his former owner either ate like a piggy or made exaggerated eating noises to him for fun.

It's unlikely he'll swallow it... birds love to play with things, and they know it's not food...

I would take it away from him immediately....... could be dangerous if swallowed.
Offer him his favourite treat, making sure the nut is out of his mouth.

I have read several stories about birds eating lead weights they either pulled out of aquariums (to weight down plants), or that were actually in bird toys. So some birds really do swallow things like that. My vet had a case like that as well.
