hi! i have a yellow crowned amazon, pickles:) its not really a serious problem but i was wondering if anyone else faces such a situation. his poop always and i mean ALWAYS ends up on his perch and not the bottom of the cage:confused: not the perch below him but the one he is perching on!!i've tried perches of different diameters but the same thing happens:31: i understand that i have to clean the perches at least once a week and wipe them down everyday. but this situation requires me to scrub them and douse them with hot water EVERYDAY!!!and it can honestly get very frustrating:mad: does anyone face the same issue?or are there any suggestions to correct it?and help will be greatly appreciated!:)

Sounds like he is too lazy to bend over and squirt!

Anyway, have you thought about potty training him?

Start outside the cage and when he gets it down, put a potty in the cage and then, no more mess!!!

buy more than one perch and rotate them....

I have a B&G macaw that does this so I feel your pain. It was suggested to try smaller diameter of perches. It has helped a bit. I keep multiple perches available too.

Are his vent feathers clean?

Are your perches oriented so that he has to sit alongways in order to see you? Maybe you just need to rotate them at right angles to where they are now? Even moving them to different locations in the cage might make a difference? Maybe?

Keep relocating his perches until the poop lands where you prefer it. I had to do this in the beginning for my bird.

captsteve: yes thats a wonderful idea!!will get down to potty training him~ hope it dosent take too long!!

crimson & Merlee: i have quite a few perches too. but i still have to wash on the same day if not it gets very difficult to wash off after a while.

monicamc: his vent feathers aren't usually clean. is there something wrong with that?:O

Betrisher & LoryLover: i will try rearranging his perches too! but i usually rearrange them every few days so most of the possible positions have been tried to no avail:(

Does he spend much time out of his cage? Is he a "perch potato"? Most zons don't poop at "home" if they can help it/given a choice. Changing things will depend on how long he has been kept the way he has. Change things up a bit and see if training/interaction doesn't help.

he spends about an hour in da mornings out on top of his cage before i go to school and then he's in the cage until i get back home at around 5 and he gets let out to roam the living room until about bedtime at 8. is that okay for time out of the cage? i'd expect he'll spend most of the time when i'm away on the perch. whenever we're at home we let him out to play and we started target training with him. does this affect his behaviour?

It sounds like your doing the right things. I can't really explain the "pooping" on his perches. I have lots of amazons and don't see that.
