The woman who I bought Puck from just called me and offered me the other caique she had, which she named "Goofy". I didn't realize she'd had another one. I guess her friend was going to keep Goofy, but decided against it, so she called me to see if I or my mom wanted it, or if we knew anyone.
This one has a foot problem, but it otherwise healthy. She says that she put him in the same cage with a cockatiel, and the cockatiel attacked the caique! I guess the caique just took it and didn't even fight back. He got pretty badly injured and had some sort of back injury, which he had surgery for. She said he completely recovered, but later developed a foot problem (she thinks he got his foot caught in the grate and injured it or something, but doesn't know for sure what happened, my thought is that it could be a nerve thing from the back injury, but I don't know), and seems to have lots some motor control, but uses it a bit and gets around fine, and is otherwise okay.
Neither have been sexed (I'm pretty sure Puck is a boy, and he certainly tries to mate with me, and I don't want babies [well of course I want babies but it wouldn't be responsible]), and they lived in separate cages next to each other. She's offering me Goofy for $250 (she sold me Puck for $450, and originally payed $1400 for each of them).
Pros: I'd really like a friend for Puck, but wasn't planning on doing it for some time, but it would be cool if it was his old friend. I love bird chatter, and I wouldn't feel bad leaving him by himself when I'm not at home. I loooooooooove birds, and will never get tired of them! Also, a great price.
Cons: I don't really have room for another cage in my tiny apartment (not to mention my property management company said I could only have one bird). I'd also be worried about Goofy getting bullied if it's so mellow it wouldn't defend itself, but I don't know how they interact. She said they would chatter to each other all day and like each other a lot.
I called my mom to ask her if she wants Goofy, but she didn't pick up her phone. I don't know what she'll want to do, but it could be cool to each have one, and then have play dates.
What do you guys think of this situation? Would it be okay to put them together? Could I put some sort of divider up in the cage, so they could share it but be separate (I think it's big enough)? Am I crazy? Am I caique crazy?!
I can just see myself when I'm old... I'll be rich and isolated, with a large house full of birds (likely including a guard goose), dogs, and organic food.
