preparing Manzanita for bird use?

My neighbor has a huge Manzanita tree in his yard that he has given me free reign to cut from (he wants the tree gone).
Are there special steps that need to be taken in order to make the wood safe for my Macaw or do I just chop, build and enjoy her pleasure?

If you are sure the tree hasn't been sprayed with pesticides, a good scrubbing with a little bit of Dawn or a vinegar solution, a thorough rinse and some time to dry in the sun should be enough to render your DIY project parrot safe. Tess will probably love manzanita branches to play on.
