Preening an African Grey

A while back my African grey parrot got into a fight with another parrot and sadly lost the upper section of her beak. Despite this injury she's fully recovered, though she needs prepared food and is obviously less mobile.

One big problem is that she can't preen herself, I've been doing my best to do this for her and she's very soft and cooperates. Doing the large grey feathers is easy however the smaller white feathers which make up the down are harder to separate. Whereas the main feathers come out in tubes which easily break up, the down feathers come out in compact sticks which aren't brittle in the same way. Could anyone suggest a good way of preening the smaller feathers?

I think the only thing that is going to help is time and patience on your part along with some good fingernails.

May I ask what kind of bird she got into a fight with and if possible can you post a pic of her injury?

Sorry, I have no suggestions for you. Just wanted to say welcome to the forum and that it is good to hear that you take such a good care of your AG.

Same here. I don't have any good advice for you, but it's wonderful to hear that you are taking such good care of her.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll just have to keep at it!

Yes, it was our Blue and Gold Macaw Jaffa. We often leave smokey, the african grey out in the house in the evening, unfortunately one day she overestimated herself and climbed onto Jaffa's cage. Didn't stand a chance against a macaw...

I'll get you some pictures when I get home, I'll get some close-ups of all the new feathers she can't preen too.

Here's Smokey, I'm amazed she survived.

I couldn't really get a close up of the feathers, bad camera and Smokey doesn't appear to enjoy having my phone held up to her. You can just about see one in the middle under her wing, there's loads of those under the other feathers.

You should be so proud of yourself. And she's a fighter, what a horrible injury to deal with, but the fact you're getting over it together is amazing.
