Precautions to take when dying hair?

I'm dying my hair light lavender in the next couple of days and was just wondering what I should do to make sure my parrot (and cats and dog!) don't get sick from it.
I'm going to my sisters house to dye it and spending the night there. I'll be bleaching it first. Can I just rinse it out once, come back the next day and make sure he doesn't get in my hair until I rinse it a second or third time? Is the smell afterwords safe, can I take him out with me after just one rinse, can my other pets touch it, things like that.
Sorry, haha, I haven't used any chemicals since I got Kirby and want to make sure it's extra safe! Thanks!

I would definitely not let him shoulder sit until you have washed it after a couple days, but what product are you using? The packaging should have some sort of guidelines ...

HC, you may end up with a problem Kirby when you dye your hair..... When I needed a birdsitter, her granddaughters would often come with her to help her & play with the birds and for Halloween one year, the oldest girl and a couple of her friends dyed their hair and when they came by to show her grandmother, my birds all got very defensive and Reno, one of my nandays and real good friends with my sitter's granddaughter until she showed up with striped hair.....for the week that she sported her strange hair, my flock would not let her in the house.....when she washed the temporary color out of her hair, she was accepted back in the house again.....have you not heard the saying parrots like routine & don't take change easily?

You might want to try a lavender wig first.....

As to the smell, I agree with POD that you should not handle him, if he'll let you, until the odor has been washed out.....

Thats a good point! I don't think Kirby will mind, however. I've come in with strange hats, full body costumes, etc. and he has not minded. He's not too attached to me to the point where he gets upset about those kinds of things. But I'll keep that in mind!

With "fantasy colors",(pink, blue, purple, red,etc) the hair is bleached first, then a semi-permanent color is applied over it. If your bird chews on your hair then make sure you shampoo with a baking-soda/ shampoo mix when shampooing out the color, as it will neutralize any odor/residual color. 1/4 cup baking soda mixed with 1/8 shampoo into a foamy paste. Shampoo with that. If your bird doesn't chew on your hair then don' t worry about it...the fantasy (semi perm) colors are deposit only and don't create a fume like regular colors. There aren't any residual fumes that can harm your bird, so color to your hearts content. the hair is lifted first, then deposited. As long as your bird isn't in the room during the color you're fine.

Is this color gonna drastically different from your current one? He might not recognize you after you dye your hair!
I dye my hair the same natural color all the time (just to hide the grays) and I just close the bathroom door and do it there. I don't go close to my bird while the color is working, but I do everything as usual after I wash it out. Never had any problem with that. But I use kinda mild commercial dye - maybe your is a bit more toxic.
