My Senegal has just turned two and over the past year she sort of has gotten the potty training idea. We've been trying. Well every now and then I'll give her a tiny piece of animal cracker cookie from my dog's Petco cookie bag. She goes nuts over them.

So today I decided to see what would happen if I gave her the special treat she craves so badly after I tell her to go poop (on her cage). We've been practicing this for a few months and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't (more often). I know she holds its all night (she never poops in her sleeping cage) so this morning when I put her on the play cage I told her to go poop. I kept asking her and it didn't take long for her to relieve herself and I said good and gave her the cookie treat right away.

This afternoon, after she was on my shoulder a long time, I noticed she hadn't made a mess on my shirt so I decided to put her on her play cage and I told her to go poop. It took a couple minutes, and I kept asking her, and she finally did. I gave her praise and her cookie treat.

Now this is where she has me laughing at her. Tonight, I've been working on my computer for awhile and I start hearing her pace back and forth on her cage relentlessly. I figured she just wants attention so I go over to her and I see her looking at where I hid a tiny piece of cookie for later. I thought you stinker you know where I put it. She leans over to me, then backs up and poops, and then looks where the cookie is. I am laughing so hard at her. I can hardly believe she figured that out so fast, just to get her favorite treat. This is going to be so wonderful if this cookie treat thing gets her potty trained faster. Now if only I can get her to stop chewing on my shirt.

That's awesome she is learning so fast, birds are so impressive :D Please be very careful though, it's not good to use treats while potty training as birds will want to hold it until you tell them to go potty so they can get a treat. This can cause internal infections and make them sick.

*edit*
With Rosie whenever I see her go I say "you went poop!" and get very excited. If I say, "Have to poop" She will go poop if she needs to as she recognizes the word but doesn't expect a reward other then praise. She has also trained me, when I let her sit on my shoulder she will start biting my ear(enough to be slightly painful and very annoying) and bugging me. It took me a while to realize this but she has trained me to take her off my shoulder and put her on a chair or her T-stand when she has to poop so she doesn't go on me.

LOL How cute!

Darcy came to me potty trained! He doesn't go on my shoulder, although sometimes he goes as soon as I remove him, but he prefers to go on/in his cage, or on his play stand.

Rio will actually start saying "Poop?" "Poooop?!" to let me know she has to go when I have her out. When I have her over her cage or the garbage I say "Ok take a poop" and she goes.

Zuzu don't say it, and i don't say at times he does have an accident, but usually if he's on our shoulder, he'll start bobbing up and down, flap his wings, and peep a few times, we'll take him to his cage put him on top, he'll poof up real big, do a wiggle and let it drop. One thing i've also learned with him is at times i'll be vacuuming the house, so i'll open his cage and he'll climb out and just sit on his door and watch me, after i'm done with the rug i'll pull it over by his cage and use the hose around the base, the wheels, inside the skirt to get whatever didn't drop in the bottom, and he'll just sit there and watch, and sometimes i'll be in the middle of it, and he'll purposely poop on the rug while sitting on his door while i'm vacuuming its like he's saying "oh heres something else for you to clean while your down there", but now I make sure to put a section from the newspaper under his door on the rug, just to make sure, lil stinker.

She must love those cookies! :) It only took 2 or 3 days to get our lory completely potty trained and that was back when she was a baby. You might get tired of giving her a cookie each and every time she poops for you, lol. Lots of praise when first training and even ongoing is all that's needed. They are such quick learners and oftentimes, understand more than we give them credit for. :)

Having a portable potty dish is also helpful... the parrot will learn quickly just to go over to it and potty. Training on the potty dish is simple, when she has to go, just set her on it and say "go potty" (or however you are wording the command). The first few times, she'll just jump off it. Keep doing it and when she potties into the potty dish, shower lots of praise on her. In a day or so, she'll have the hang of it. For a potty dish, we use a round, hard plastic, plant liner tray. We line it with a couple layers of paper towel. The rim of these round plant liner trays are rounded and perfect for the parrot's feet. Has worked like a charm for us for the past 15 years. :D

Cassie sounds like quite a character
Great that she is learning to poop on command
