So instead of going to Kailua (half way around the island for me) we went to Aloha Animal Hospital which was a block away from the vet I regularly go to because he was closed today.
Since I had to go at 4:40 pm ish and they close at 5, it was considered an emergency visit.
The hardest part was weighing him, he did not want anything to do with the perch and kept trying to fly away.
The doctor thoroughly inspected the wounded area. I mean really thorough.
He suspected that he was picking at his vent as, I quote, "I can't find his booty" and that the wound was overlapping making it harder for him to poop. He described the area as pretty damaged. He also said that the sides were irregular and one side was harder than the other. At the worst, it could be a tumor or something that would be hard to remove...hoping that it's not.
He was also tested for a yeast infection and his fecal matter. Perfectly clear!!
I left with medicine to treat him once every day for the next 2 weeks. Itās supposed to help clear the infection from the inside out instead of the other way around. I was told that any treatment outside could mess up his oil gland area. I asked about the collar and said he makes capes but he feels like theyāe the Cone of Shame and can potentially make his growing feathers turn out bad.
The really bad news is that heād like to have me try find his original owner again.. he complimented Gizmo saying that he was really well socialized and someone did care for him a lot. It would be so hard for me having to give him up again because he has bonded and accustomed himself into the family really well. Itās a really tough call.
On the other hand, Gizmo was extremely well behaved and was like a rag doll in his hands. I got to "examine" him for myself and feel the breast bone and the pelvis and got to look closer into his ear.
Now post-post appointment, I tried administering his medicine but I accidentally did all of it at once (0.1m) and he threw up. Iām talking about projectile vomiting, he was placed back into his cage to fill up again with lots of millets to ensure he eats. I donāt even want to risk trying again. Iāll be trying to pace it at .05M with a 10 minute break in-between.
I think I covered it all, I had all my notes on my phone but I accidentally deleted it! If anything comes to mind Iād be posting it.
