Possible Adoption

Went to see 3 year old female yellow headed named mookah today. She's very friendly and talked right away and played peekaboo. She did beak me on step up but did same with her owner. She runs right to shoulders though and lightly tested my ear but behaved and showed no aggression on my mom's or owners shoulder. She's quite a character and LOVES attention. I'm used to small birds like tiels and conures.

Funny thing is my heart was racing after she tested my ear cause I had an Amazon 25 years ago crunch down hard on my ear but not enuf to draw blood. My fault as he never was on shoulder before I'm lucky he didn't really get me. I believe now it was curiosity not aggression. He went to a home with a woman with no arms. He hated hands and they are best friends. Maybe it was her saying see I'm not like Elliot lol

I have to think about this as I'm not sure if she's too much bird for me and she's still young so prob not hormonal yet. Incredible how social she was with strangers esp since she was also just woken up from the dark to boot which had me hoping she'd handle drastic house change. Said he only was bit once but it was cause she was falling off and grabbed on.

I love zons personally, but they do take a certain 'type' to want to live with one lol. They are fairly adaptable, go with the flow birds if trained properly. They can inflict a nasty bite (if they want) and do have a notorious reputation for bad hormones (though females tend to be better than males). They tend not to like to be touched, but can be taught to step up and most (not all) will eventually learn to accept some petting. They are not 'lap birds' and appreciate their independence. The good news is, they aren't stealth biters and let you know in no uncertain terms when they're pissed. Amazons are also smart and (again, if properly cared for) highly social birds who want to be in the middle of everything. The form strong bonds too, and a well loved zon will become your best friend for life. One last thing, don't expect to ever shower or dine in peace again with an amazon in the home. They will impose themselves in the middle of whatever the deem a flock activity (showers and meals at the table rank pretty high on that list).
