He is SO upset that he has to wear an e-collar! :(

Last night, shortly after I posted about him coming to help me eat my burrito, I noticed a bit of blood on the ground . After examining everyone, I noticed that Griffin had blood on his toe. I got him in a towel and cleaned him up with peroxide. I could see just a tiny cut. It stopped bleeding, and he was his usual happy self and went back to playing. I thought that was it, and it was going to be okay.

Apparently, he had a damaged toenail too... I failed to see it last night with artificial lighting. By this morning, he had chewed the nail almost completely OFF, as it was splintered down to almost nothing, down to where it meets his toe with the bloody quick exposed! He kept chewing at it, and caused a pool of blood to drip the size of a quarter. That was it. He went to the emergency vet.

Griffin was a good little boy at the vet. They gave me an anti-inflamatory, and oral antibiotic and ointment, and sent him home in an e-collar big enough to engulf his entire body :52:. Curiously, the cost of this emergency visit was MUCH LESS expensive than his normal vet...

Well, he is NOT having the collar. He's making it his mission to destroy the thing and get it off as quickly as possible! It's a little too big, and he's able to get his lower mandible into the part around his neck, so he'll make short work of it I'm sure. I'll have to call my regular vet in the morning to see what alternative they might have to the cone style e-collar (or at least a smaller size).

Griffin usually goes over to Raven's large cage to play every night, but today Raven took one look at Griffin, and was apparently offended at the unsightly apparatus which was engulfing his little friend, and decided to attack him!:( Of course I was right there and removed Griffin within a split second. My poor boy is SO upset he has to stay home and play in his own smaller cage (at the bottom). I feel sorry for him, but we have to do what we have to do!

** HOW did this injury happen? I really am not sure enough to say. I was in the room during the time frame when it happened. I did not hear any screaming or sounds out of the ordinary.

Ouch ouch ouch.....Had that happen with my grey....Darn guy gets himself in a bind from time to time. He broke a nail apparently one time and had to do same thing your going thru...God he hated that thing. Another time ( and on a Sunday nite when there is NO vet available), He gets this metal bell out of a toy some how, and since it was one of those flimsy tiny Santa bells I call them, he managed to bend it with his beak where it was wrapped around his lower beak and into his mouth. My wife was panicking, I was trying to hould the bird and with twizzers unwrap this metal bell from his beak ...all the while getting severely bitten up . Needless to say, He dose not get toys with the hidden bells in them.... I shamed the pet store for even selling these like this as it's very dangerous for a parrot....and my hands!!!

Poor Griffin, what a terrifying ordeal! Wishing him the speediest recovery, make sure to give him a few extra treats from me!
How long is he required to wear his e-collar?

Maybe he caught it up in a toy? At least you caught it before he made it worse. Hopefully he gets a quick, full recovery!

Ouch, I can feel that! I banged my nail really good when I was a kid and ended up losing the nail, prettiest black and blue and purple you ever saw. It really hurt for awhile but eventually deadened and then I had some fun with it. :) When the nail loosened I was able to "hinge" it, TOTALLY freaking my Mother out (who is, ahem, "somewhat" squeamish):D

Oh poor Griffin, I hope he doesn't think the burrito did it. Poor boy, the collar is torture.

Oh no, That had got to hurt poor guy! Hope it heals well and he feels better soon!

Thanks everyone :).

He is NOT tolerating the collar, and is not eating because of his mad obsession over the collar and NOTHING else.

He's supposed to wear it for at least close to a week. I don't see that happening. I want to take it off for him to eat and play, but I'm afraid I won't be able to get it back on. The wound is still too fresh, and I'm afraid he'll start it bleeding again. I'll have to call my vet in a minute to see what I can do.

I'm really careful with toy safety, BUT, Griffin did need a nail trim.... Then, there was also a laceration up the same toe, so did he get bit? But I didn't hear any scream. I honestly don't know how it happened.

I have a good picture of what happened but I didn't post it due to the graphic nature of the close up with what was left of the nail splintered and shattered all the way to the toe, and the bloody quick hanging out.

Oh no, poor Griffin! First injured, then the humiliation of a collar and shunned by his friend as well! :(

I hope your vet can suggest something to keep him away from it than an ill fitted collar I will be thinking happy healing thoughts for Griffin!

Oh please be careful! We had a very similar story with Parry, and he chewed off almost his whole toe! We didn't put the collar in the beginning (were told so by ER vet), and it was a huge mistake. He ended up wearing both tube and E-collar and bandages for over a month and have countless vet visits. He would have had his toe and nail right now if he had bandage and collar on from day 1. He was so miserable in his collar, but when he figured I was not gonna take it off he got soon used to it and lived pretty normal life flying around and doing all his usual crazy stuff. :)

Poor Griffin!! How awkward for him with that goofy lampshade contraption! Raven is probably wondering how that "alien" got in the house. :24_shocke

I do remember that with Parry. I couldn't believe he kept chewing his toe OFF . I guess when they want to get rid of an injured part, their instinct tells them to get rid of the damage no matter what! Only he went a little too far.

I honestly didn't think this was that bad. I've had birds for long enough that I don't freak out over every little thing, and my experience tells me I don't need to take them to the vet for EVERYTHING. But a pool of blood dripping, that goes to the vet for sure!

Today Griffin went to the regular vet. He removed the collar and agreed that since the toe has been clipped and cleaned and he no longer seems in pain, he doesn't believe that Griffin will be picking at it. We left the collar off, and my a-vet who I trust said don't give the antibiotics. The ER gave it as a precaution, and he said at this point it's just not necessary to give medication for 10 days just as a preventive measure.

So since the rest of the nail was removed and the injury is drying up, no meds, no collar... :) The collar DID serve the purpose for the day and a half that it needed to dry up around the injury.

He's SO tired today though. He's sleeping. He fought with the collar all through the night. Didn't sleep, didn't eat.

I'm glad the poor boy is doing better!

Maybe his buddy will "talk" to him again now without the collar.

Thanks. HAHA you should have seen Raven... He was truly freaked out at the sight of his little friend inside a "lampshade"! That on top of my recent laryngitis, Raven is looking like this :52:.. He just doesn't know what is going on LOL!

Poor babies! You really gotta stop torturing them like this!

I am so glad you were able to get Griffin in to his regular vet today, and I am thrilled that he has gotten rid of the lampshade!
Bless his heart, I bet he is exhausted:(
