I just got this sweet guy. He has plucked a lot of feathers. He will frantically start biting himself and pluck. Could he maybe have mites instead of just plucking? How could I tell the difference? When he spreads his wings he is almost bald underneath. I am wondering if I should take him to a vet?

First , congrats on your new boy :)
I'm sure there are more knowledgable people in this group that could give better insight and suggestions but could he be overly stressed ? From what I know about them ( which isnt too much I will admit ) they need a quieter home environment .
If he was my boy , I would make that vet appointment to make sure there is no underlying health issues and IMO you should have him checked anyway since you just got him. Was he a re-home ? Did he come to you plucking already ?

Congratulations, Eclectus are fun laid back parrots that are really not bothered by anything. I really think it's a myth they need a quiet environment. Eclectus are like most other parrots they really love to be in the thick of the excitement. Even though there is only my hubby & myself as well as all my other parrots, dogs & all the grandkids popping in from time to time nothing upsets any of my eclectus at all.

First up i would take him to the Vets to rule out any medical problem. However diet can have a lot to do with eclectus plucking. Has he had a good quality balanced diet, small amount of seed, pellets lots of veggies & a few servings of fruit daily as well as sprouts & raw nuts. Lets face it eclectus can eat any healthy foods you eat yourself.

Then comes hormones & also boredom. Almost forgot a daily shower does wonders as well. Eclectus just love water.

There are also a couple of products that some swear by that you can give your plucker. Avicalm & featheriffic used together is supposed to work.

Google both for product information.

How long have you had him? And how old is he?

Moving to a new home and owner is a lot of stress, but a vet trip, even just to get a baseline assessment, is in order anyway.
