Tango - WBC
Almost there!! The breeder called me yesterday to let me know that Tango appears to be finally off the baby food so the next weekend I have my daughter, we go get him!! I am wondering if you guys would mind sharing with me your feeding schedule in terms of what you feed and when, especially people that work a 9 to 5 day. I'm trying to find a pattern in how people schedule feeding time, but it seems all over the place and some are just impossible with a fulltime job. What would you guys suggest? From what I can tell, the pellet dish should just be full all the time and it's veggies and fruits in the morning and evening. Yea or nay?

Thanks in advance to people that take the time to share :)

First of all, congrats on Tango's impending arrival home! Great news!

I guess the short answer would be: consult with your vet. For a longer-winded answer (goodness knows, I'm really good at those), here's what I do, based on consultations with Eliza and Henry's vet:

Pellets and fresh fruit are always good, of course. I also make a "chop" mix. I got this from the vet. (There's a link below that goes into more detail than the handout I got from the vet.) Anyway, the chop mix is nice because you can freeze a portion of it for later. It's basically 40%-50% grains, 10% cooked legumes or beans (which are optional) and 60% veggies.

I've used quinoa, but brown rice, kamut, spelt, farrow, and hulled barley are also listed. (Obvious point, but you want to let whatever grains you're using cool down after cooking them!) :)

For beans, it's just the usual soak overnight and then cook. I've used garbanzos and red beans, but pink and pinto are also mentioned. Drain 'em and let 'em cool.

For the veggies, which get chopped up in a food processor, I've used kale, broccoli, green beans and red bell peppers (all organic); additional veggies mentioned include cauliflower, snap peas, jicama, radishes, anise, hot peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, bok chou, mustard greens, Swiss chard, collared greens, carrots parsnips, brussels sprouts, and so on. Avoid veggies that have a lot of water in them, like cucumber, because the mix comes out too wet.

Anyway, mix all the veggies, grain(s), and beans up, package them, freeze some of it and so on.

I give this mixture to E&H mixed in with the pellets (and add some fresh fruit).

This is pretty much a condensed version of the recipe the vet gave me. There are other fun things you can add to it. Here's link to what appears to be the original source of the "Chop Mix":

Oh, for the liquid portion of Tango's diet, Joel recommends sipping tequila. In my house, it's single-malt scotch. So I guess it's just a matter of preference...

Seriously, I hope this helps a little. And please keep us posted on Tango's arrival home!

Hi Derek, that's fantastic, thank you! And no worries, I'm all for longwinded when it comes to learning :) So how often do you feed your 2 little fellas during the day? Do most people offer morning and night or is one or the other OK? I know for dogs some people do 2 a day, I prefer once a day... my dog won't even touch her food until night time anyhow, so it doesn't matter when I fill it lol!

Thanks for the recipe too, going to print this all out and start a new recipe binder for Tango lol! So far I have a birdy mash recipe and that new pizza recipe that was just posted the other day :)

Oh, and we're more of a vodka household, but I've got some Johnny blue and some Chivas royal salute 21 year just in case. If he joins me for a cigar, I have a nice 30 year Taylor's I've been saving for a special occasion lol!

Great... I've revealed myself as drunk lol

Speaking of which... *raises glass* here's to Henry's health :)

Pellets, grapes, whatever we are eating for dinner (chicken, veggies, pasta, ravioli etc.) a few nuts or a bit of yogurt as a treat.
Weekends they get eggs and/or oatmeal for breakfast.

Henry says "Thank you very much," and raises a glass in return! Well, okay, in reality he tried to push it off the counter, but I managed to get there in time...
;)

I feed them once a day, although I'll occasionally add a bit more in the late afternoon/evening, depending on how voracious they've been that day. Also, if I'm having caique-friendly food for dinner, they'll join me for that as well.

Cheers!

Whats great about Caiques their such great eaters !! Please don't make them just eat pellets and fruits and vegs . Learn to do chopmix , mash ,oatmeal fruitmash . birdie bread , pancakes scram mix .Its good for them to have a variety. :)

They eat lots of cement mix. I just cleaned up a cage, and it's the only answer I could come up with. I've got to figure out who their supplier is!

I'll definitely be making some goodies... we do a lot of cooking in our house so I'm sure mister Tango will have his beak in to everything like our Rattie used to lol!
