Sully-2 year old cinnamon and Bella-3 year old normal
breeding pair of gcc, Scooter & BeeBee-Sully and Bella's normal son's, Rosey- Bella and Sully's cinnamon daughter, Ella & Sunny-American budgies
So one of my 3 month old green cheeks just got her foot hurt. She was on top of Scooter/Beebee's cage and Beebee got a hold of her foot. It's not bleeding out but he tore the first layer off the bottom of her foot. It is all red and a little bit of blood is at the surface. My parents are out of town so I can't go to the vet(I don't drive) so is there anything I can do to help it not get infected until I can take her in? The flap of skin is still covering the wound so do you think it will just heal closed by itself?
Please help, thanks.

Hmm... I know honey is a natural antiseptic. I used to volunteer at a vet clinic; they used it on horses all the time. It'd be safe if she ingested it, although it might cause her foot to stick to things.... that's really all I can think of. Just an idea.

Otherwise, just make sure it stays clean and keep an eye on it. If the skin is still there and it is laying properly over the wound it should keep it fairly protected and scab nicely, and eventually fall off when new skin grows underneath... just like any wound.

If the wound is closed it should be fine. If it continues to swell or becomes warm to the touch then a vet visit is definitely needed.
As poster above stated Honey is an excellent natural antibiotic however it is only Manukah honey that has these qualities and it would be difficult to use due to the location of the injury.
You could also do some warm water soaks to help ease the pain. I hope your baby soon feels better.

Yeah I think I over reacted. She seems fine, she is moving around fairly normal and the wound looks pretty good. I will keep an eye on it, but for now I will just rinse it off everyday and keep it clean.
Thanks for the honey idea, that sounds good except she might just eat it all off.lol

I use raw manuka honey for all kinds of things like cuts , burns and insect bites.
The stuff works great.
Hope her foot feels better soon.

Sounds like she fine. I use aloe Vera on my birds when needed. I keep a plant so I can use fresh. My grandmother told me about it many years ago.

Yeah so far she seems fine but if it starts to look bad I will take her in.
I had an aloe plant but my mom killed it, and aloe plants are very hard to kill(they survive through everything), proves how good of a gardener she is.lol

Sounds just like my mother! She once killed a cactus by not watering it enough... and NEVER let her near tree pruners. Three years later and my parent's poor cherry tree still looks like a victim of a tornado. :'(

Hey cdog, this kind of injury happens at the rescue every so often. We just keep it clean and keep an eye on it and as long as I've been there there's never been a problem :) I bet she'll be fine!

Good info, keep it clean and monitor. If the situation changes, contact an Avian vet.

Best of luck!!
