Hi all I will start by saying thank you for your time and answers,
Today we were given a bird It has a red front, its back is red blue yellow its wee face is red and blue.
The man who originally owned it sadly passed away
Below is all the info I have on it
The bird is 12 years old, we do not know his original name the people we just got it from ( they have only had it for 3 weeks) called him Eric (the original owners name) we have no idea what kind of bird it is or the sex of it. I would like to find out as much as possible about the bird so I can properly care for him, I showed a picture of him to a man who works in a pet store and he says its a parakeet but I would like to know what kind,
what sort of things to do and don't how it deals with bereavement ( kids think im daft) but I believe like us humans they will sense loss and I want to make thing easier for him between the loss and the quick change in owners.x parakeet.jpg hope this file loads just remembered we were also told it has never been handled and I would like to be able to handle him how do I do this?

Sorry I can't help you with the species, But he sure is a very beautiful bird (handsome) Good luck with him.

What luck! Crimson Rosellas are lovely birds and their call is one of the prettier of the Australian parrots (IMHO). Yours looks unusual to me in that it has the sprinkling of yellow feathers: it could be a hybrid between a Crimson and Yellow Rosella (which you don't get all that often). Rosellas make good pets and learn to talk fairly easily. It's difficult to distinguish between the sexes except to say the males are very slightly heavier-looking. DNA testing would clear it up for you.

I hope you and Eric are very happy together! Welcome to the forum and do keep us up with his progress! :D

Hello,

Yes mainly a Crimson Rosella. Plenty around here, so we dont appreciate them like we should. Crimson_zps8a015ee1.jpg Photo by CRB60 | Photobucket I took this Pic yesterday, a bit in the shade but a pair of birds in their habitat. They can be cheeky and very demanding if you feed them. My friend does and they fly in his garage to " buzz " him. The Yellow is not a normal colour, and a hybrid will often look far more like one of the parents than the other.

I was guessing liver failure or feather follicle damage for the yellow feathers????

The yellow isn't unusual in Crimson Rosellas. There are 5 subspecies, with those around the central southern part od Oz (i.e. the Adelaide Rosella) is actually known as the Yellow Rosella in some circles. So Hattie's bird may well be showing some natural colour variation.

I would consider the Adelaide Rosella a hybrid.

Thank you all
Can any of you give me any tips like I said
As far as we know Eric is 12, and has never been handled ( this is the only information we have) His original owner passed away and the people we got him from told us he likes chocolate cheese and bread which I assume cannot be good for him so he wont be getting it from us unless it is good for him.x

Rosellas really aren't "pet" birds. They are better known for being aviary birds and do better with their own kind.

If you want to try and make him into a pet, if he isn't one already, then I would suggest looking into positive reinforcement training. Start slow by just offering him food by hand that he enjoys eating and work your way from there.

As far as the yellow feathers, without knowing what he looked like 12 years ago when he was a chick, you can't say that that is a result of him being a mutation or if something else is going on. He should have some blood work/cbc panel done to ensure that he is healthy.

Chocolate is bad for birds, don't ever give him chocolate!
