my Sun conure had a toe nail bitten last week. today I noticed her shivering and favoring the foot. She had seemed to be healing but now it's red and slightly swollen. I will have her meds tomorrow, my question is whether she will be okay till about 5 tomorrow. I can take her to a vet in this area, but I'm not around an avian vet till I get home tomorrow.

That's a hard call to make. I treat infections as an emergency. I keep Baytril (antibiotic) onhand . A regular vet can get you some along with a dosage. The problem is most are dog/cat vets and only give out pills( don't do well with birds). If you can get the injectable stuff you only need to feed them a small dose with a dropper/syringe. baytril is very bitter and they won't take it voluntarily. Yes the bird needs a vet asap.

I agree with HP, but for this type of injury, I keep Neosporin cream on hand & while I will do it, I don't know if you would want to open the wound, express any infection & apply a topical antibiotic.....this is where an extra pair of steady hands may be necessary.....

I don't know about other antibio creams, but the Neosporin is safe, even if the bird were to lick some...the secret is to rub it in until it is dissipated/absorbed & don't use the ointment version as it is petroleum based.....

There is also the fact that you don't know if the redness is caused by underlying bone/joint damage.....

Good luck.....
