Please come out of the cage!

My CAG is a great bird. Healthy and happy and talks up a storm. The problem is he will not come out of his cage. I have resorted to at times putting gloves on and 'pulling' him out. Not aggressively as I would never hurt him. Once he is out, he sits on my shoulder and does great. It is just that he will NOT venture out at all. He also will give you a nice bite if you stick your hand in there. I have to either give him a treat to distract him to get to his bowls or wait until he is on the bottom or opposit side of the cage from the bowls. He is so protective of his cage territory.

Any suggestions? I would just like him to have some out of cage time to enjoy himself.

I would bite you too if you stuck a gloved hand in my cage if I were a bird. OMG please do not do this as it will only compound the issue. I suggest getting a nice parrot stand and make it look enticing with lots of treats and new toys. Place it near the cage and open the cage door. Just let the bird be and do it on his own. You cannot and should not make a bird do what it does not want to do. It may take a long time so don't watch him. Just go about normal family business and let him do it himself or herself.

Your bird need to trust you and know that you are his guardian. He or she needs to feel safe and the fact that the bird chooses to to come out of the cage speaks for itself. Most likely your bird has taken possession of his cage so I suggest you do not put your hands in the cage. Try putting a perch on the inside of the door so that when the cage is open the bird may sit on this perch and then you can open the door. So to review the important things here: 1. a parrot stand if you can afford it 2. no goved or even bare hands in the cage 3. perch on the inside of the door 4. relax and do not worry about this - greys know what you are feeling.
